How knowledgeable are these reviewers? There are many people out there that can accurately judge a lenses quality. There are jus as many that cannot.

If you want premium quality oats, you will pay a premium price. If you are willing to settle for oats that have already been through the horse, that comes a bit cheaper.

Are you saying DxO in not knowledgeable. You know DxO, don't you? While I have problems with their lab only approach, when combined with a large number of independent reviewers, that is a reliable indicator. The old days of only OM lenses will work are LONG gone. The new Sigma and Tamron lenses have proven to be equal or superior to many Nikon and Canon lenses. They are even matching other third party lenses with solid reputations like Zeiss (have you heard of them?) which is rather well known for producing tip of the line optics.

But if you like buying designer jeans at designer prices, be my guest. Just don't tell me they are better quality than Levis.

I have bought thousands of $$$ worth of used camera gear from Japan.....with no duty, tax or tariff of any kind. Of course, used may have different than new.

In the case of the OP even if the lens is brand new it's still considered used.

My current favorite lens is a 70-300mm zoom but after a vacation to southern Utah I'm looking for something that will give me both a wider angle for the broad scenery shots, but also a longer zoom for animals, birds, etc., without having to change lenses. I'm looking at a gently used SIGMA APO 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM at half of the $2K retail price, but it's from Japan. I know that there won't be any warranty beyond the limited eBay safety net, but is there anything else I need to be concerned about with ordering a Japanese lens? (or any other suggestions?)

You may want to consider the Tamron 18-400 f3.5-6.6 VC. Many good reviews, 6 yr U.S. Tamron warranty, about $649.
