We frequently use Amazon and my photography hobby that began in retirement has made B&H and others quite pleased. I am thirty plus miles to decent shopping selections and only one little camera shop with no real inventory.

Wow, I'm only 10 miles, but they are small also. A chain, but a small store.

We have Home Depot, Walmart, Kohl's and Lowes about 10 miles away, and local grocery stores, but that does not suit many of our needs. We're 28 miles south of Ma. and 8 miles west of RI.

You may want to try B&H in NY/NJ. Competitive prices, great selection and quality products, free shipping on orders over $49 and NO TAX.

Not anymore - tax will be collected on out of state internet sales - period. Free shipping and selection will be the only advantages over the local camera shop. Or one can move to DE, where there is no sales tax.

I've been getting email from eBay about this for quite a while. Why wouldn't politicians want to collect more tax? Eventually, if you live in NY and make a purchase from a seller in CA, you'll have to pay sales tax on that. Yes, you will have to pay state sales tax on a sale that did not take place in your state. And that makes sense?

This has ALWAYS been the case, but the states were not great at enforcing this. It's called a Sales and Use tax. It is collected at the point of delivery. And in many cases it's just not limited to state tax - the local boys have their hand in your pocket as well. But now the crap is about to get real.

So it makes a lot of sense for me to buy local.

That's if you even have a local merchant with good prices and selection and knowledgeable sales people.

I actually have good prices at my local dealer. When I bought my Nikon Df it was priced $15 less than B&H but of course I had to pay about $250 for the tax. So they do have good prices. The salespeople are knowledgeable. I do have the complaint that they are not very nice. A few months before I bought the Df I came to the store and asked to buy some film they laughed at me. But still I bought from them because I wanted to see the camera before I buy it.

We will soon be legal residents of New Hampshire. My wife and I have both retired in the last two years. We have put the brownstone in a trust, have moved all banking and other financial revenue streams to NH institutions. When we were both working about 49% of our income went to NYC State, City and Federal taxes. That did not include Real Estate Taxes. In New Hampshire, there is no sales or income tax. It's a little different but are getting used to it. Besides from Manchester NH airport to the city is about an hour away. We can spend some time get our city fix and leave Dodge.

I am in Illinois and order from B&H all the time. I just received a letter from them that as of 10/12/18 they are required to charge sales tax on Illinois purchases.

How long before other states will jump on this wagon?

Soon and it's only fair. I don't argue whether or not a state should collect sales tax but if a state collects sales tax when you buy locally they should collect it when you buy online. That's only fair.
Many years ago back in the late 70's when I lived in Illinois. My friend would go all the way from Michigan to visit me then went to Lion Photo in Aurora to buy his cameras and lenses. He would tell the salespeople to ship them to Michigan so that he didn't have to pay the tax. Oh yeah he paid in cash because back in that time he didn't have a credit card.

It is quite easy to estimate how much revenue a state loses due to internet sales. While we do not like taxes, the revenues of forty five states include a sales or use tax. I'm simply saying that the lost revenue will have to be collected via another method if sales tax collections are allowed to be decimated.

My experience with B &H and Adorma is that I can call and talk to them or do a live chat and get all the technical advice I need to make a intelligent decision on what I want to buy. They have experts in whatever brand and type of equipment you want to buy. You don't have to talk to just one person that has limited knowledge. So many of the photography stores have gone out of business in many towns that you have to turn to on-line buying or travel a great distance. And with the price of gas going up, there would be no savings.

I much rather have the camera in hand to check it out than listen to some expert.
