A Walk in The Forest

The New Forest to be precise. The smoke effect is provided by a nearby, very large, bonfire. The walker is a guy that jumped out of his car, iPhone in hand and walked straight into frame - which, for me, added interest. Dark, bright, contrasty - would you treat it any differently? All comments and critique welcome.

Beautiful. Perhaps "pop" the walker just a bit, so the eye notices him sooner?

You think? I’ll try it Bob - I was actually considering turning him full silhouette.

I was having problems reconciling the huge and in-your-face rays with the rest, especially because the rays lead out of the frame. I came up with a more fanciful version which I am sending to you via pm. For me, it seemed to need to go over the top to be acceptable, lol.

Dave said I could post this. Edits include a bit of cropping to increase the towering height aspect. And I'd like to change "acceptable" to "appreciated" in the last sentence of my earlier post

I think I have the same problem with this photo that Linda mentions. I think the rays overpower the composition and the details like the walker (which is very important) get lost. The problem is that I don't know what I would do to mitigate the problem. I'm at a loss here.

I am not sure how they couldn't lead out of frame Linda (?) but anyway, I like your version - very arty.
The quantity of smoke was quite overpowering and, of course, out of our control. "You know" who got some great shots, but you have to wander off to those more common forums to see them I'm afraid!

I REALLY like this third version!

You've caught Henri Cartier-Bresson's " decisive moment."

In my eyes, up til now, Linda could do nothing wrong... OH, my Scientific Soul anguish, torment ... one does not need Statistical Handbook 92 to compare photos. One only needs to make size and resolution the same, then increase canvas size and do a simple side by side comparison. I will not comment on which image is my favored... A, by magnetoman, and B Beloved Linda.

You changed my aspect, Don. Mine is not same crop as Dave's

Dave, I like halfway between your first and your second and maybe with a smidge of mine + a slight trim of the sides

I think I prefer the original. We don't have many 'tall' trees over so the additional height might mean more to us than the U.S. hogs. What part of the forest was this, magnetoman?

Indeed you cropped the original, but the crop was not the main change. You also changed the resolution significantly, from 72 to 200, what/why was the reason for change? Accident? or Something I should be educated about? My point is that comparing A & B, they should be side by side.

Aspect ratio, yep, I often cheat and change the ratio to fit my 8x10 printer... no one notices the difference.
