Something is wrong here. I have a XPS 13 with a SSD and a 1T external and I am way faster than that. Once everything is in the catalog after the 1st download, everything is snappy.
Are you in 64 bit mode? What are your preview settings? Are you syncing with CC? Do you autowrite XMP data? What size is your cache?

I cannot say for certain as I have not run it low on battery. The Asus battery manager allows you to build different profiles for performance or longevity. I have mine set for performance and have used it at the airport and in the field with no issues. I especially like the option to only charge to %70 while plugged in and on (it will charge to 100% if laptop is off) to increase the life of the battery.
