Teleconverter for Nikon D500 with Tamron 16-300mm lens

Does anyone know if the Tamron Tele Converter 1.4x TC-X14 will work with a Nikon D500/Tamron 16-300mm lens? I have been searching the web all morning and haven't found the answer.

I also have the Tamron 150-600mm G1 - I understand that using a tele converter with this lens will not allow me to use auto focus -- which is ok - I am looking for a converter because I can't take this lens on my horse but I can the smaller lens.

But before I purchase one - I need to make sure it will work whether in auto focus or manual mode with my setup.

Thanks everyone! Will be leaving on a hunting trip Oct 17th ...looking to score one before that if it will work.

IMO, the best you can hope for is to maximize your IQ @300 mm and with the D500, CROP and use pixel enlargement software. IF, you get the 1.4X to work, it will only exacerbate motion blur @420mm ! - which may be challenging from a horse.

Thanks.....I won't be taking pics while riding but once we stop and are on foot or once we are in where we will be camping/hunting. I use a small Sony point and shoot to take pics while riding and it works great.

I have LR and Affinity - just purchased Affinity and still in the early learning stages for it - but that should do the pixel enlargement your talking about.

Some cameras will not autofocus when the focusing aperture is f8 or smaller. You would need to check that out your camera and how the convertor would affect your lens at various focal lengths.

No, it will NOT work.

Here is Tamrons full TC compatibility chart (Incompatible lenses are NOT listed):

Thanks...that's what I was looking for! I knew it wouldn't work with the 150-600 G1 lens but just couldn't find anything on the tamron 16-300. Was hoping I could at least use it in manual focus - Oh well....guess I make room in the packs somewhere for the big boy! I can do without food...lol

No you can't use a tele converter. If you really need such a long lens you consider the sigma 100-400mm it is lighter than your big tamron.

Also if you are concerned about compactness and want long lenses consider micro 4/3 There is a Panasonic 100-300 and 100-400, (For FF equiv multiply by 2). I think there is also an olympus 300 f4.

Just a thought. There is a lot of photography that can be done with your 10-300mm lens

Thanks for the info! I don't "really" need it but I "want" it...lol - isn't that how it always is with a hobby!

We will be hunting in very large area with a lot of elk and I would like to get some good shots without having to crop a lot. Since I have the larger lens already - I might as well see if I can make room for it.

Even if it does “work”, you’re asking an already compromised piece of glass to do even more than it’s capable of.

Ok - I have to ask...what do you mean by "already compromised"? I have had some good success with the Tamron 150-600.

Even with modern optical design and manufacturing, any zoom lens that has this sort of extreme range is a series of compromises. "You don't get something for nothing". There are big differences between my Canon 24-70L and my 24-105L and my primes in this range are better than the zooms. Add a teleconverter to a lens like the Tamron and it is further degraded. It's optical physics and engineering. I've always wished that I could have one lens that does it all, but until there is some sort of fluidly adaptable optical "glass" we're stuck with reality, especially when you put in the cost per unit equation in play

I know primes are better, but my budget just doesn't allow for them...yet! Thanks for the explanation.

I understand. My business allows me to buy the best equipment for the money. That being said, if you do your technical research you can find glass that is pro-level that performs well. Just don't be drawn into the proposition that you can get one lens that does it all. It belies reason.
