I am a fisherman that loves to take pictures. I am a very armature photographer. I started with my iPhone 6 last year and seem to have caught the bug, big time. I don't generally take very good pictures. In looking through my pictures I seem to point and shoot without much regard to composition, balance and lighting. I realize I need advice and thought this site could really help me step out of my "ho-hum" attitudes, so here I am.

Welcome. Photograph what you love and love what you photograph. It all comes together in time. If you enjoy using your phone as your camera, use it, it will always be with you. If you want to branch out, take your time. My suggestion would be a Nikon D7200 with a kit lens. You could purchase one used from KEH on the internet, well trusted company for used equipment, for refurbished, B&H Photo, the point is, you do not need to start with brand new equipment, start off with used equipment to save a few dollars until you are committed. I am sure there will be other suggestions for other brands, they are all comparable, Chevy or Ford, it is all in our individual experiences and tastes. Good luck with whatever you do.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy your stay! Photography is mostly a self-learned hobby. Try to make it a habit, that after taking your initial snapshot, to stick around and look at the scene from different perspectives, take your time to walk around to find another point of interest. It will improve on your composition and help you to not miss the best view of the scene. After that becomes second nature, start shooting in manual mode and find YOUR "style/view", by selecting exposures that come closest to what came into your mind when looking at the scene and in no time you'll be no more a "ho-hum shooter"!
