Good afternoon!
My name is Laydee and I joined the site yesterday. I seemed to have gotten myself into a situation, I guess you could say. Surprise lol Anyway, I won a Nikon D100 through an auction site and when I received it, there is no lens with it nor a battery charger , just the body. I take that back, I have the battery I believe. I began shopping for a lens and almost choked to death. They are somewhat expensive! I tried to research the type lens affordably I could use so I can at least use this camera but yes I'm a newbie at this and I cannot interpret what the sites are saying. (and yes I am somewhat intelligent) :). I found a Nikkor-q , model 365153 f/35 135mm? lens, is this compatible with the D100? I think at this rate the smartest thing to do is try and sell this and start over. Thanks, Laydee
The lens you are looking to buy is a so called "Pre AI" lens and can damage your camera. The focal length of 135mm is too long to use for general purpose. I don't know how much you paid for it but the camera that you have in perfect working condition is only worth about $30. I think you should sell it for whatever you can and buy a different camera. There are many version of Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lenses which you can use and not very expensive especially a used one.
This is a rather old body. You won't have problems finding lenses that will work fine with it. But, for CF cards (the memory cards), you may be limited to 4GB, a size that went out of style about 12-years ago. You can find plenty on ebay, but probably not new in shops.
For lenses, the camera is a DX model. If you limit your search to DX lenses, you shouldn't have any compatibility problems. Although, probably all your options, even used lenses, will have more value than the camera body. If you're looking for cheap lens ideas, try looking for used copies of the following that should run $50 to $150 on ebay, at KEH, Adorama, Amazon, etc:
Nikkor 18-105mm F/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX
Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED IF AF-S DX
Nikkor 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR II
Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED VR AF-S DX
Without going too far into the meaning of every Nikon lens codes, if you focus on lenses with these three codes, you'll have tons of compatible lens options: DX / G / AF-S
Hi Laydee,
Go to keh.com and see what they have available in your price range. They are a dealer of new and used photography gear. I have purchased a few lenses there for a great price. They rate everything from "New" to "Ugly". I've never bought anything with less than an "Excellent" grade, but some folks in online forums have said that even those graded as "Bargain" were in decent shape.
The D100 is the first digital camera I bought and it's served me well. I hope that you like the camera. Happy picture taking!!
Brian
Thank you so much,I appreciate it!! Laydee
ebay has a number of the battery chargers (MH-18 or MH-18a) up for auction. The D100 takes a EN-EL3 battery, which you can get thru Amazon separately or, if you want, a pair of batteries and a charger for $21.
You'll get plenty of helpful advice on lenses here in the next couple of days. Be patient and choose wisely.

You invest in a lens. They can make the most difference (up to a point) in the quality of your images.
With lot of digital cameras, the bodies are nearly disposable.
A good lens is going to last longer.
That being said, the 18-70 was a common kit lens for older digital cameras like yours. It was a very good performer. It does, however, lack vibration reduction, which comes in handy at slower shutter settings. Probably best to get a newer 18-55 to start.
I used the “Quote Reply” option so you would know which post I was addressing. Something newbies here should learn to use.
Welcome to the forum.

This is a valid and good observation...but...
I know that there was a firmware update that allowed use of larger capacity CF cards in the D200. I do not know if there was an update that accomplished the same for the D100. But...depending on how you think you might be using your camera, even a 4GB memory card will hold a respectable number of images on the D100. My experience with the older bodies was that there was a pretty good balance between memory capacity and battery life. So you should be able to do good things even if you end up being limited to 4GB.

The wiki page says the firmware update only provides access to 4GB from the original 2GB support. Although I have older CF cards from 1GB to 8GB, I don't have this body to confirm.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikon_D100Those small capacity cards are getting harder to find.
I may have a few I can send if the OP sends me a private message.

My Micro Center store usually has several to choose from. With older bodies, there is less pressure to find the absolute fastest cards available.
This is 2018. Get rid of it and start with something newer! A refurbished D5300 with 18-55 lens will be reasonably priced and is lightyears ahead of the D100.

Laydee,
Research Ken Rockwell site: kenrockwell.com he has recommendations for all Nikon lenses and he has an special area in witch he compares the expensive and cheap Nikon lens. You will be surprise how good reports he has on the cheapest Nikkor lenses, including with a compatibility between Nikon lenses and Nikon Camera models. It's worth looking. Hope this helps.
Cheers
