I have forgotten where, but milions of years ago a large space rock (forgot official name) collided with earth somewhere in SW Northwest America. Did it cause the dinosaur die-off.

In the fifth grade an unfriendly spat put me on the losing end of a rock fight. I ended up with a smallish rock (1-2")meeting the end of my nose. I guess I was lucky in that my eyes were spared but the cartilage was shattered. Even after some corrective surgery I started to snore loudly.

For free-fall objects, there is the need for work-energy to get the rocks up in the air.

Old science fiction story (Asimov? Don't remember the name of the story offhand.)
In a war between the moon and the earth, the moon threw rocks. Escape velocity from the moon was significantly lower than from the earth so the energy investment was fairly low and rocks are abundant.

The moon won.

Robert Heinlein, The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress. Mike (the self aware computer) said "We can through rocks Man, we will," Great book for those who haven't read it.

BIG ROCK - Estimated to be six miles across; impacted the earth at between 10-20 MPS.

Seriously, we had several physics classes in which we had to work out the worst case scenario for a descending rock to Earth. There are so many aspects to consider. Meteorites are not exactly free-fall objects.

For free-fall objects, there is the need for work-energy to get the rocks up in the air.

However, consider a space based launcher in the asteroid belt.

That one landed in the ocean just north of the Yucatan pininsula, called Chicxulub. And yes, the theory is that it killed off the dinosaurs.

There was an interesting show on the Science Channel that discussed the Yucatan event. Evidently animal life was killed off over several days, and by different methods. Part of them died during the intial impact and explosion, and some died off after the ash started to settle. Evidently the meat eaters outlasted the vegetarians, but they died of lung disease. Evidently, a very complex event.
