I was trying to take a picture of the satellite launch has happened to me before but yesterday it was spectacular and I couldn't get it. I have a Canon Rebel and in the dark trying to take a picture of the satellite launch in the sky (very brightlite 7:22pm) the shutter wouldn't open. I was in P mode. What am I doing wrong Thanks Bud
First, you were right. It was absolutely spectacular. I have been watching these launches from Vandenberg AFB for decades. This was one of the best ever because of the returning booster to the launch pad. We heard the sonic booms at my home in Simi Valley which is 100 miles away from the launch pad.
I used a Nikon D810 and a Nikkon 200-500mm and was able to get the camera to focus and trigger in aperture mode using ISO 10,000.
Here is what I captured. At 100 miles away... Rocket just before 1st stage separation (shooting through trees and telephone lines in dark), and at 1st stage separation (photo cropped) above horizon line.
The colors were amazing.
P on a Canon Rebel camera stands for Program AE (AutoExposure) mode. Not professional mode, as per the camera owners manual. (I have a Canon EOS Rebel T7I).
