On the other hand, those of us over 70 have put up with stupid clerks for many, many years. I think that when we were young and working, we were more knowledgeable and had better manners. The people on the other side of the counter these days act like semi-intelligent automatons with no ability to think. After telling the person 3 times that I really want the blue one, or that is the size that I want, or I don't need a filter today, or my order is to go, I tend to get frustrated and let the person know it. I'm like a mirror, I reflect back the way that I am treated.
On the other hand, those of us over 70 have put up... (show quote)

There are tons of stories for both sides of the post. for e.g. The story goes a McD's young clerk was serving a customer and he said he wanted half dozen chicken McNuggets. Clerk replied we don't serve a half dozen we have only 6 or 12. And the argument began! Ok! I'll take a 1/2 dozen. (C) we don't serve a half dozen ...

I was a Police in Baltimore City, then a Deputy Sheriff in Rockbridge County, Va. 36 years in all. Most of the people I dealt with were floating on an even keel. Of course, those who had been victimized, in some way, were normally upset. The "older folks" were no more grumpy than some of the youngsters. Remember, you can't paint one group of folks with the same brush. Though you can say, Most Police, especially Retired Police, are sane and Very Handsome !

Did you forget "a bit egotistical and possibly narcissistic!" or at least they should put on their glasses before looking into a mirror.
Ahhh! My inner bratty mean little kid is coming out today.
Thanks for your 36 years. One of my Uncles did some time as County Sheriff in Clearfield County PA starting in the 60s.

We get grumpy for a reason. In the 50's we called some folk "Labradors", just like the dog.
They were usually cute, had "the look". You could talk to them and tell them anything but you were only pretending to have a conversation. Just like talking to the dog. Just counting 3 days: the weekend and Monday:
I worked retail. We even had lessons in proper bagging. I went to Ralphs and even told the bagger that I separated the frozen things out for a reason. Labrador explains but she bags by size.
I go to CVS. The 2 folk in front of me argue with the checker. My turn- he doesn't speak English, he's not old enough to handle alcohol and other adult items, and he's STILL on the phone. Who hired this Labrador?
I go to Domino's pizza. I ordered 1 Supreme and 1 Veggie pizza. I get home and they're wrong. I call up and go back. The 20 something ESL counter guy is upset with me. Why? He shows me- the 2 girls working in the back made the pizzas look like the pictures on the wall. They did what they were told to do, it's not their fault. Labs.
I go to my doctor. He listens and looks for 5 minutes, looks at his screen for 4 minutes, and prescribes medication based on what the screen tells him "Hey! I'm not here for that! And that was wrong 20 years ago!" He doesn't work for me, he works for the insurance company; he points to the screen gives me that Lab look and 2 prescriptions.
I go to O'Reillys for oil; it's next to the store I'm really going to. I pick up a quart of 20w50 synth diesel oil and hit the counter. The kid scans my card, goes and comes back with a different oil- "You have a Toyota- this is what you need!" I say: "No I only want @ a pint for my oil can, for drawer slides and bearings etc., tho I may use some to top off the Toy because it loses @ a pint @ 5k miles." F'n Lab kid smiles, "Yo! You need *this!*" I leave.
I got a minor operation, stop back at CVS for supplies. Gauze, bandages, vodka and tape. Lab girl at counter: "Why the vodka?" Me: You have stinky 28% rubbing alcohol that leaves a white residue for $3.99 a pint, and 3x distilled food grade 50% clean alcohol on sale for $7.99 a liter. Between cleaning my wound, my keyboard and mouse, and a few cameras, that bottle will last the year." Loud Lab girl: "You're SUPPOSED to use DENATURED alcohol dummy!"
Grumpy old man just smiles and says "Get me your manager!"
I thought I did good lasting that long. That may be my new goto phrase.

Personally, I think the kids are a’right these days, and getting better and better.

I work with young interns, mentoring them in housing and community development - future lawyers, architects, bureaucrats, and leaders.

I listen to our kids and grandkids and their friends - who are almost universally more open-minded, less biased, and kinder than my generation.

I work with political volunteers, as earnest, dedicated, and hardworking as any group you could want to meet.

So when a kid at the checkout is brusque or distracted, I ask their name. I remark that they look tired. Or I just thank them for helping me.

And you know what? At least 90% of the time I get a smile and a reply, even if it’s “No problem”. That’s just the 2018 phrase for “You’re welcome!” And I treat it as such.

And at least a few of my young friends seem to think
I’m pretty on fleek for a grandpa.

I’d rather have the future in their hands than in the hands of some of my own generation.

Andy

Well Jerry, I'm 80 and still laugh and joke with everyone, but I do notice that some young people recoil when they see an older person approach them, maybe they're expecting a grumpy old fart and are bracing themselves??
