Hi everyone. I am a "newbie" to this digital photography world, and I believe I can learn much from the people on UHH. My photography background: In 1970 I bought my first camera, a brand new Nikkormat with a 50mm 1.4 lens. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Since my cooking skills were poor, I turned my small kitchen into a dark room, took some basic photography classes, and learned how to develop film and print B&W photos. But my photo interests soon changed. An opportunity to apprentice as a camera assistant for an Emmy award winning cinematographer presented itself and I took it. After a two year apprenticeship I was on my own. For the next twenty years I worked as a cinematographer shooting and editing 16mm and 35mm film and later videotape. All of this was before digital took over. A severe back injury ended my career and caused me to pursue other work. Presently I am in the process of retireing from a second career, and my creative interests have once again turned to photography. Wow!! This digital world is so reliant on computer skills, and the learning curve is very steep for me because my computer skills are poor. For example, (and I'm embarrassed to admit), I can get an image into LR, but I don't know how to get it out LR to post on UHH. As I said, I have much to learn which is why I joined UHH. Thanks in advance for your patience.
Hi everyone. I am a "newbie" to this di... (show quote)

Yeah. I bought my Nikkormat FTn with 50mm f/1.4 on August 8, 1969 (age 14). I worked on the newspaper and yearbook staffs at my high school, learned radio and recording in college, and became an AV producer after deciding radio sucked as a business in small markets. (It really was JUST like 'WKRP in Cincinnati'.)

I had a darkroom from age 10 to 18, and again from 23 to 40. I worked for a photography and yearbook company (okay, three of them) for 33 years, and I was lucky to learn computers way back in 1982 with an Apple IIe used for slide show programming. I helped lead the charge to trash film gear and "go digital" at our company in the late 1990s – early 2000s, so I sort of "grew up" with Macs, PCs, and all sorts of software and digital imaging gear around me.

It CAN BE difficult for those who missed the first wave of computing to learn computers and software. My kids grew up with mice in their hands, now iPhones and trackpads on MacBook Pros, so they just assume what we struggle(d) to learn. If you jump into any game after it's been around for a while, it takes extra effort to catch up. If you live it daily, it's another story.

Hang in there. It IS possible. But it can seem like scratching your way through a brick wall with a Boy Scout knife. When you get to the other side of that wall, though, you're in this enormous toy store with every cool thing you ever wanted to play with! The only problem is, it's expensive! Take it one day at a time, read all the fine manuals, and as many books on the subject as you have time for. YouTube is also a tremendous resource full of training films. Enjoy this site. It can be brilliant at times, brainless and mean at others, but it is totally worth reading and watching. Welcome to UHH!

Thanks much for your encouragement and support. You nailed my situation with your analogy of scratching through a brick wall. The learning curve is steep, and I am learning much from the discussions on UHH. For example, for a while I was using the camera for point and shoot jpg images. Influened by UHH discussions I turned off all auto features and shoot totally manual. Shooting in manual, like the Nickkormat, forces me to think about and choose shutter speed, f stop, focus, and ISO. Also I now shoot raw and I am learning how to process images in LR and PS, but still have a long way to go. Thanks again for your help.

Thanks Don. I appreciate the welcome. Everyone here on UHH expresses a willingness to help by sharing their knowledge and experience. I can learn a lot. My back limits me, but I have to deal with it. Hope my surgery next month helps.
