hj have you considered the advantage of subject isolation?
Shooting wide open allows for razor thin DOF which often can eliminate background distractions...
This is one of the compelling reasons why commercial sports photographers pony up over 10K for f2.8 400mm primes
btw, even overcast daylight can easily allow 1/4000 at ISO 400

Thomas902, of course you are correct but there are also times when the background adds to the event, especially for local hometown interest. These shots aren't intended for a sports magazine.

I see both sides of this subject. Thomas is looking at the shot through professional eyes and the poster is trying out a new lens. Everybody has different taste.
