I've always been fond of this image. I was at the grand opening of the Sacramento train museum in about 1980 with my trusty Minolta SRT100. I noticed a grandpa and grandson with matching engineer's caps and waited until the crowd cleared enough to get the shot. I only wish I had gotten their names so I could send them copies. This was back in the days when I processed my own film and enlarged it in my darkroom. I had the negative scanned and adjusted it a little in Lightroom. I took out an overhead wire and cropped out some people and a 4x4 post that was adding nothing.

Great photo and interesting story.
What a great story to accompany this fine image. Thanks for sharing it!
Looks like the Union Pacific 484. I have a nice replica of that on my HO layout.
The humans give perspective on just how big that engine is.

Thanks, erickter. It is indeed UP 484. It was renamed after it was retired in 1970 so the number could be recycled for new engines. I believe it's still working as an excursion train.

Inspiring picture! Excellent capture of the mighty engine and two admirers.
Wow, reminds me of my grandfather after he retired from the Pennsy. I got my first cab ride with him at age 4.
