Sculpture in the burl.
It has been a very busy time, of late. We are preparing to move out of state, and all this has impacted my ability to get out and shoot stuff. We did, however, take some time off, to visit some friends who live in the Sierras, and there are always photographic opportunities up there. (This is also about the only time I get to experiment with astrophotography, because of the absolute absence of light pollution. But, that's another post.)
We took a hike up to Little Bear Lake. The lake, itself, is very photogenic, and I did indulge myself. The scenery was truly beautiful, but it was something on the rocks, on the shore, that intrigued me. It was a good sized piece burl. I couldn't figure out how it got there, or how it was anchored on the rocks, but it seemed to be posing for me. I took a few shots, and, as always, it was during editing that I really noticed the various ways one could interpret this "sculpture".
I'm not a particularly religious fellow, but one of the first images that came to mind was a pieta. Pieta is a generic term for religious art depicting Mary cradling the body of Jesus. I could see Mary, in a long, flowing gown, and I could see her right arm, gently wrapping around the body.
To me, the image of one creature cradling another was so strong that, no matter how I tried, I could not get that image out of my mind. It could be a mermaid, cradling a seal. I tried to see a reclining nude, in this sculpture, but that required too much imagination. (I have plenty of imagination.)
Anyway, for your consideration, the Sculpture in Burl.
It is wonderful when we stop and take the time to look at nature closely. This is better than clouds--very nice!
Now that you mention it. I see the Pieta. Nice shot too!
Thanks! I hoped it wasn’t just me.

Lovely detail bought out well.
Well seen and nicely shot. I see your sculpture, and more besides - as you say, it could be many things.
Thanks, all! I really wanted it to be a nude, because, well, I've never encountered a nude, while I was hiking. Oh, wait! i take that back. I was out hiking, a few years ago, and I crossed paths with a man who had nothing on but hiking boots and a knapsack. I figured either he lost a bet, or was trying to win one.
It's a lovely burl and nicely photographed.
Somehow nature gives us forms like this that have figurative recognition and convey compassion. Hope you don't mind my adding an example. Taken with my first digital at the side of my neighbors house.
No, I don't mind, at all. Anything anyone has is welcome.
