The all around lens I use on my full frame camera is 50mm. That would be 35mm for a crop sensor camera.

Yep, I second that suggestion - pick the MKII version if you go that way (the MKI had a known internal ribbon cable issue that affected some lenses).
Which lens came with the camera? Use THAT lens for a while & determine what it's not doing for you, what lens may do a better job for you and then start shopping for another lens that works well with your needs rather than a lens that meets the needs of others.

If your camera was full frame I'd suggest my favorite the 35mm 1.4 -- But with a crop frame I would shoot with the suggested MkII version zoom

I believe the OP’s camera is a FF 6D...

50mm f1.8. its cheap and sharp. Great lens to learn on and will show you what you want in additional lenses.

By God your right again!! -- then I'm back to suggesting the 35mm 1.4 --

The normal lens on my 6D is a Tamron
45/1.8 and it's one one the best lenses
I've ever had ... 50 years many dozens
of lenses.
It's $400 street, and if that is too much
for you, stop reading.
If $400 is OK, here's its ups and downs:
Down:
1 only. It's a bit large [see "8" below]
Up:
1. No external motion except MF ring.
2. Has focusing scale.
3. No visible distortion.
4. Verrrrry minimal corner shading at
wide open, and gone by about 2.8.
5. MFD about 9 inches.
6. More than sharp enuf for peepers.
7. 45mm is a verrrrry cool FL :-)
8. Smaller than its competition.
Basically this is one of those "Super
Normals" of the Distagon family, but
it's a 1/2 stop slower and 5 - 10mm
less FL than its peers, which brings
the price down by about 1/2 with no
other compromises.
=======================
I'm not a prime lens purist and also
use the 24 - 105 as so many others
have recommended. Can't knock it !
If a zoom is a necessity for you then
go for that. But, if you're intrigued
about those premium prime lenses
with their crazy prices, consider the
Tamron 45 as the solution.
All those "nifty fifty" that folks are
so impressed with ? I got a bucket
full of those those [various brands]
nice lenses but not truly premium.
I'm not a peeper. I only care about
differences that are plainly visible
in real pictures.
