Dan Snyder, owner of the NFL Redskins, has announced that the team is dropping "Washington" from the team name, and it will henceforth be simply known as, "The Redskins." It was reported that he finds the word "Washington" imparts a negative image of poor leadership, mismanagement, corruption, cheating, lying, and graft, and is not a fitting role-model for young fans of football.

Well it's about time. And while we are at it, there are a number of other sports teams that need name changes as well. In response to an article by Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune covering the Redskins story, a reader wrote:

Dear Mr. Page,
I agree with our Native American population. I am highly insulted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward.
Let’s ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns.
The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of militant Blacks from the 60’s alive. Gone. It’s offensive to us white folk. The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men’s lives.
I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres.
Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Pittsburgh Pirates!
Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children:
The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children.
The New York Giants and San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children.
The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our children.
The Milwaukee Brewers. Well that goes without saying. Wrong message to our children.
So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the do-nothing Congress loves.
As a diehard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the Oregon State women’s athletic teams to something other than “the Beavers” (especially when they play Southern California. Do we really want the Trojans sticking it to the Beavers???)
I always love your articles and I generally agree with them.
As for the ‘Redskins’ name I would suggest they change the name to the ‘Foreskins’ to better represent their community, paying tribute to the dick heads in Congress.

Yes...DC is exclusively controlled by Congress. I understand that the residents there don’t like that... but the solution is to amend the constitution to allow DC to become a state. Thing the Dems would like more as that would give then 2 Senate and 1 House seta forever. But then they would have to be treated like every other state and would lose the massive subsidies they get from the federal coffers. DC does not have sufficient tax base or other revenue potential to be viable as a state. Better they petition MD to be annexed as part of MD...that would give them full representation but even that would REQUIRE amending the constitution...and the likelihood of that happening is essentially non existent.

As a D.C. resident and no fan of football (way too dangerous), this is funny! However, and on a needlessly serious note for this site, the story belies the fact that 700,000 people (400,000 of whom are registered to vote) live in the District of Columbia without the full benefits of citizenship - voting representation in the US Congress and Senate. Article 1, Section 8 of the US Constitution created the federal city "under exclusive control of Congress in all matters whatsoever." We pay federal income taxes, "state" income taxes, property taxes and sales taxes, but have no final say in how those tax revenues are spent in our own city, for our own residents, and our locally-legislated programs and laws. Our City Council creates a budget and a plan to spend our tax dollars, but must get approval from Congress to move the budget forward to implementation. And any member of Congress from any jurisdiction can step in and, without objection from us, add a rider to our budget bill to thwart those expenditures. No other jurisdiction in the USA has such control exercised over its local governance. And, while we object to the actions of those outside legislators, we cannot vote against them, unelect them or otherwise challenge the legitimacy of their actions to thwart the will of the residents of the District. The original Tea Party (remember Boston Harbor?) was a challenge to "taxation without representation," the words that adorn most DC license plates. Voting is what makes a democracy work. We are all challenged to study the issues and listen to the candidates and then decide and "vote our conscience" on election day. But 700,000 DC residents have been permanently disenfranchised and forced to accept the consequences of votes cast by residents of the 50 States. Please act wisely. Our shared destiny depends on it!

I hope all agree that we have a wonderful country and one can move where one wants to or feels it suits them best. Washington DC is the richest metropolitan area in the US BECAUSE all of the outsiders bring their money to spend there. There must be something keeping you in DC if you feel like the long standing rules that you complain about are treating you so bad?

Actually, they aren’t located in Washington, per se, but in Landover, MD.

Given that they are in the area, I can certainly see why they’d want to disassociate with Washington D.C.

Good point but not only do they play their home games in Landover, MD where the stadium is located but their corporate offices and practice facility (not including the pre-season training facility in Richmond, VA) are located in Ashburn, VA.

Maryland already has a Washington county and lots of slums. The residents may not want more(slums).

If you want representation the answer is simple--MOVE.

It is in a lot better taste than a lot of the drivel I've seen here. Besides, whether to the Right or the Left, you have to accept that fact that the loonies have taken over Washington.

So, you do not think ALL the politicians in Washington are NOT lying, self-serving, hypocritical, egotistical, dishonest, untrustworthy whores???
