Hello fellow Hogs, Here are some captures of African elephants in their natural setting of the African bush. They can eat up to 450kg of vegetation per day and need about 225l of water a day. It is inconceivable that these magnificent animals are hunted, and killed, for the illegal ivory trade. :( Please view in download.

Beautiful animals, and pics. I agree, kill, cut out the tusks, and leave the rest to rot, basterds should be tied naked to a thorn tree, covered in syrup and left in the sun.Same goes for Rhino poachers, and poachers in general.

Poachers don't care about the animals, the environment or wasteful killing. Sorta reminds me of our current president.

Opps - did I say that ?

I like your kind of thinking Blueduck. You obviously know what these thugs do, all for the sake of its supposed aphrodisiac qualities. I know what should be cut off!! and I'm sure you would agree!

Excellent set.The authorities the world over should clamp down on the poachers and also the buyers heavily.

I understand and sympathise. The senseless killing of animals is a selfish act for personnel gain. The poachers are often poor, and the men behind it all are the ones who make the money without having to pull the trigger.

how do you think they felt about people who were killing off their food supply and helping to drive them off their land. thats why they went around taking the moss off the north side of the trees and pasting it of the south side, muttering"damn white man killed off all the buffallo".

Enjoyed these photos Shaka. I love elephants. i have fond memories of riding an elephant in Sri Lanka. Apparently the elephant liked me and gave an amazing range of noises talking to me afterwards.

Many years ago children and adults could ride an elephant at Taronga Zoo in Sydney.

I'd like to see conservationists helping African nations to fund more rangers to help save these elephants from being killed in this heartless way.

Sort of reminds me of most presidents, or most people in general, for that matter. We kill antelope, deer, elk, bear, fish for the express purpose of hanging them on the wall to impress visitors. If we eat the meat, that's a plus, but I think a whole lot of hunters do what poachers do-throw the meat away. Most of us don't take care with the environment, trashing the land and water. As far as wasteful killing goes, if you stop to think about it, what killing isn't wasteful? We are all a part of God, a part of the whole. I'm not particularly enamored of the President, but he has done no better or worse than past presidents in those areas you mention.

Nice pachyderm photos Brian. I like the third one the best, I think it's the curly trunk thing that does it for me. :)
Good-on-ya mate!

I'm so glad that these photos evoked pleasant memories for you. I believe that the conservationists in Africa, particularly South Africa, are doing a lot to save the elephants and the rhinos. The problem, however are the governments of the nations of final destination for the illegal ivory and rhino horn. These governments need to ban the imports outright and impose severe penalties, if caught. One of the major culprit governments is, I believe, China. If this thread causes something to assist elephants, then we've all achieved something. Thank you for your response and genuine interest. I'll post photos of rhinos, soon.
