They are colorful.
Closest part of their range to you would be SW Texas, Central New Mexico or the East Coast of Mexico in the SW portion of the Gulf.

Nowhere near.

It depends on your definition of "near". Oh, my inner brat just came out.

I thought I saw it Wed but by the time I grabbed my camera and opened the sliding door it was gone. Then Thursday I saw it on the fence, then to the power pole, this was the first frame. Cloudy and dim with changing light so the ISO was going sky high, anywhere from 1000 to 6400(the limit I have set on the camera). I took about 80 frames on the power pole, on the swing set, etc plus 12 more of the jays and a squirrel. First cull cut it down to 31 shots, now 33 with the two edited versions of this one, two of the squirrel and one of a jay. I have to go over the others when I get time.
80D, 100-400+1.4x=560 mm, 1/640 @ f/8.0, ISO 2500, hand held at about 65 to 70 feet. This is aprx a crop to 30% of full frame.

Thanks Sue
I have now seen a male and at least one female multiple times, they are snatching peanuts I put out for the Jays and at least once peeking at a 4x4 in the frame of the old swing set in the back yard and the power pole in the corner of the yard. I may have some new regulars to my feeders. According to the bird book the males claim a large territory with multiple females. The range map also shows them as year round in this area.

I am really not that steady anymore myself but:
1. I use a pistol grip on the tripod collar.
2. I brace on something every chance I get.
3. I use higher SS these days.
4. I use the "time your breathing & heart beat" method I learned for target shooting years ago.
5. Finally I "cheat" and use burst shots then discard the rejects.

I pretty much do the same things, Jerry. Excellent shot of the bird.
