Hello all,
I would like to buy a fast 2.8 lens for soccer. Nikon mount, would consider any brand , focal length, but the longer the better. I would entertain any suggestions.
Thank you,

How much do you want to spend? Their prices are definitely related to their quality. All 2.8’s are not equal. I bought a 1980’s Nikon 80-200 twist zoom for $375 ( a steal, they go 5-600 ) and I love it. Shot thousands of pictures at my sons football games through the years on Nikon D7100, D610 and then D750. My sons teammates would be asking for pictures right after the game because they knew I got great shots. If you want to spend the money a new version of the 80-200 ( the AF-S ) will give you faster auto focus and a slightly sharper image.
Most probably the 80-200 that has been recommended to you or the 70-210 also f2.8.
The man who shot soccer at our HS games shot with a Canon 70D, 70-200 2.8. With the crop factor, that effectively got him around 300mm. He never shot RAW, just max res jpeg. The only thing he might do in post was crop in a bit, but his photos always looked great. Without the 2.8, he wouldn't have been able to shoot the night games, so all those longer lenses would not have been useful to him.
Sparky, you will need to set you budget first. Then look at your options. You will need lenses in the 200 to 300 range minimum. If shooting primarily during the day your options will be endless. If shooting under lights you will need a F2.8 lens and the costs will rise considerably.
You failed to say if your Nikon was a DX or FX ? It makes a huge difference.

Actually, unless the camera requires the SWM (silent wave motor) in the lens, it doesn't make a difference. They both will use either FX or DX lenses (especially if they have the built-in focusing motor Usually the D7xxx) I have both DX and FX cameras. I use the DX for the additional reach on the same lenses as the FX and I ONLY buy FX lenses for both. My old DX lenses will work on the FX cameras (D600 and up) but they will put the camera in DX mode or will vignette the outer portions of the FX images so will have to be cropped to dX.

Thank you,
70-200 f2.8 is the sports lens. Any brand.
I have and use the Nikkor 70-200, f/2.8 VR. It is fast, sharp and dependable.

Thank you,
WHERE will you be standing relative to the players?!?
... along the sideline?
... in the stands?
I do NOT know how 200mm will be long enough with a full frame camera BECAUSE most of the action will be away from where you will probably be standing ...
... Yes, you can move around ... but, not that much.
IF you are planning to take pictures of a child-or-grandchild, then have him-or-her stand (
and, run around ...) in the field
AND THEN look at him-or-her/them in various places on the field (
if you don't have access to the Pitch where the game will be played then find a-park-or-an-empty-parking lot OR use the street you live on ...) ...
.... DECIDE how tightly you want to frame the person/object/
whatever to determine the field of view you want the lens to capture
... THEN, determine the maximum focal length you want for whatever "Zoom" lens you want.
Maybe a 70-200 Zoom will work for you, but I doubt it.
IF you have-or-can-borrow a "travel" camera which has an integrated SUPER ZOOM to use for your first outing/game/"test", then you can see how much magnification you will want for whatever lens you buy for your camera.

Consider Nikon's new 70-300 1:45-5.6, its light, fast and, to my eye, sharp.
You can get a used 300mm f/2.8 AI lens for around $1000.
