He was looking for an answer. The other responder, like you, decided to ramble on.....without address his question. What are you recommending?? What manufacturer?

T.J, I don't know why you continue with this tact. My ramble, responds to your gratuitous remarks. And if you looked at my first post you would see 4 links--only links, and no comments, for my SSD suggestions. And might I ask you...what have you suggested? Other than your demeaning comments.
Davet,
Forget all this BS...good luck with your choice. I know it will be what you want.

Keeping data (pictures) on an external drive is a common practice with Mac owners. I use a Windows desktop with lots of internal storage as my main computer. My Macs rely on their internal drives for non-processing use. You will still need externals for backups.

I kept my mouth shut. I don't have an answer. I don't use any of them. I would suggest you have an extra bowl of Wheaties maybe that would toughen you up to withstand the onslaught of perceived "demeaning comments".

Keep in mind that any hard drive can fail suddenly. From what I've read, if your SSD fails, it does so suddenly without warning. You absolutely should have a second backup plan with everything stored elsewhere, such as the cloud. I find that it's much faster to copy/paste rather than cut/paste files to the external drive when you have a lot to back up. You don't want to delete the originals until you are absolutely sure that they are backed up correctly. You can try one of the free cloud services right now without buying any new hardware. Upload some photos, then download them and see if the quality of the backup suits you.

I suggest that if you don't have anything constructive to offer, then just keep your mouth shut.

About the question at hand, you are right. Hense I did not offer a suggestion. About responding to a pontificating fool. That's something else. Don't forget your Wheaties. Toughen up.

I’ve bought my most reliable Mac accessories from them. You have a wide range of drives and enclosures from which to choose.

Be sure to get a drive that supports the fastest connection on your iMac, or the fastest connection you can afford below that. Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C or USB 3.1 all work great, IF your iMac supports one of them.

As others have said, have a backup strategy! ALL drives fail eventually.

I purchased a Western Digital 4TB external HD, Model "Elements" for the very same reason as yours. All new images are saved to this drive and gradually I am moving my images on my internal drive to the external. This has been giving me back storage space. Cost for Elements 4TB was $90. I also bought a Western Digital 8TB "My Book" for the system backup. Now I am not overwriting old backups. Cost around $160. I would not recommend Western Digital "My Passport". The wireless set up was absurd and my first set up quit after 1 use so I had to replace it. Stick with the manual set up using wires in my opinion. Consider the 8TB for the images backup depending on how much you shoot and the file size of each image. I suggest B&H.

I use both ssds and spinning drives. If the drive is simply going to stay on your desk it is safe to use a spinning drive. However, I would install two, one for your files and a second one for backups that may include time machine. The SSD will be faster and load your photo catalogs a little faster, but you get a lot more storage for the buck with a spinning drive. I like G technology drives that spin at 7200 rpm as that is a little faster than most drives that spin at 5400, and my Capture One catalogs are large. None of my images are stored on my desktop as the 500GB SSD holds my applications with no room for large photo files. Check out the G technology drive at amazon G-Technology G-DRIVE USB 3.0 4TB External Hard Drive (0G03594).
Whatever you do, you should purchase two drives and set one as a backup drive in case one fails. I use Carbon Copy Cloner to automatically back up my image storing drive to a second drive daily. I also send the files to the cloud via CrashPlan, because I want to be extra careful.

Amazon S3, Google, Microsoft (Azure) and Apple ICloud are major players, and there are many other smaller providers. I would strongly suggest picking a well known major provider that is financially stable such as those mentioned.

This is amazon's choice. It has almost 1500 customer reviews.
