Beijing Camera Question

In the near future I am traveling to Beijing on business. Rather than ask about what to bring, I’m thinking more about what to buy while there, if anything.

Can anyone recommend a travel camera manufactured in China for which I might keep an eye open for a good or fair deal?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Although there are a lot of cameras made in China, I doubt that there is any worth buying that has Chinese brand and so it wouldn't be cheap over there. I am not sure about China but I know about Vietnam. Olympus makes most of the OMD in Vietnam but price over there is higher than in the US.

If you’ll have room to bring back gear, vintage Seagulls from the film era are becoming quite collectible.

Agree that there are few bargains to be found among current models.

Any electronic equipment you buy in China will have no warranty when return home. Buy what you want here.

Decide what camera you would like to have, check the price here, and then see what they charge there. I wouldn't bother getting a Chinese branded product, though.

I would not be surprised if the camera you are looking for in China is cheaper in America.
Buy here.

I had a friend that worked in China for years tell me about all the copied things you get there. He bought a top of the line laptop while there to save money and a month or so after he got home he had a problem. He took it to a dealer and found what looked like a Dell computer on the outside was full of cheap parts not made by Dell. So this opportunity to get a cheap camera may prove to be a problem in the long run. I would purchase before you go and take lots of photos while there.

When I was in Beijing my guide told me that she has her uncle, in the US, buy her cameras and computers and then send them back to Beijing since they are less expensive in the US.

This is exactly what I was thinking when I went to Shanghai several years ago. I spent an afternoon at this very impressive building that housed almost all of the electronic retailers in the city. What I found (and what several wealthy residents had for-warned me) was that there is no "Chinese" brand of cheaper but quality cameras. All of the retailers had the same Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony, Olympus, etc. cameras that you can get here. The prices were no bargain, and if you have a problem when you get back to the states "fughetaboutit"! Enjoy your trip, and be careful not to fall on the great wall, but there is nothing to buy but Chinese artwork at reasonable prices.

I've lived in Beijing for 10 years. You will get good deals on Chinese products such as lights and tripods and gimbals and drones. There are no decent Chinese cameras and I would stay away from name brand cameras made in China. They are often of inferior quality (Canon, etc.) and you will have no guarantee anywhere but in China. If you are looking for tripods or accessories you can go to the Wukesong Camera market and look around, though prices are always higher for foreigners and you have to bargain hard.

What sort of photography: document copy, military installations or surveillance?

While you're over there, you might keep an eye out for the head of Interpol,
Meng Hongwei. He flew from France to Beijing on Sept. 28, and hasn't been
heard from since. His wife reported him missing to the French police. He's a
senior member of the China Communist Party, so it's suspected he's the victim
of a purge.

Scores of Chinese CEOs, billioinaires and ordinary businessmen have disappeared --
only to reappear days or weeks later with no explanation--or in prison.

Of course, they wouldn't dare touch a foreign businessman...they'd have
to answer to the Rotary Club.

But seriously: the way things are right now, I'd leave the camera, shortwave
transmitter and one-time pad at home. But bring the L-pill -- you might need it.
