I was thinking about getting a new Canon M-50 mirrorless to take along with my SLR when I went on vavation. Best Buy sent me a birthday discount so I ordered one online to try to see if I liked it. Well, it seemed to be a good little camera but I couldn't get used to the electronic viewfinder so I returned it after a few days. They told me that there was a 15% restocking fee, $94.00 in this case. I thought they did away with that restocking fee years ago. So, beware buying a camera from Best Buy unless you know you will not have to return it.
I always check return policies no matter who or how long I have been buying from anyone. I don't need any surprises!

Maybe they did away with letting you know about the restocking fee.

Once in a while I will buy something from Best Buy but usually I go elsewhere. I find their prices to be higher than I like.

They had a restocking fee many years ago but stopped it for a long time. I usually go to a local photo store or use B&H but this time they offered me a 10% discount for my birthday. They said that there was a note on the web telling me of a 15% restocking fee but I guess I looked over it. I's not over, I will talk to City Bank today, I don't need a Best Buy card if there is a restocking fee when you buy something you don't like.

I do get PC related items at Best Buy. They seem to keep a few knowledgeable employees around for computer related stuff. Camera equipment is primarily a job for Allen's Camera outside of Philadelphia.
Support your local store!
When you keep getting a price increase, you ? support your local store

Their prices are competitive with B&H and Adorama. They also provide competitive prices on used and refurbished items. And they can walk me around the store and show me lower priced alternatives. Can't get that online.

I do support my local stores most of the time, one more that the other. One carries very little equipment and doe's mostly photo processing. The other I buy from most of the time. I just bought a computer from Best Buy and had points to use. My mistake.
Perhaps too many people were taking advantage of the no stocking fee return policy. Once a camera or lens is removed from its original packaging, it can no longer be sold at the original "new" price.

Perhaps that is the reason. They forgot to tell me that when I bought it. In any case I know it now. I just wonder if $94.00 is worth loosing a long time customer. Thanks for the responses.

I don't need a salesman to walk me around the store for lower priced alternatives. I research products, their costs, and their competition before purchasing. I find I am much more knowledgeable about the products I want to buy at Best Buy than the salespeople are. And I can search for lower price alternatives online just as easily. But it's all about personal comfort level and whatever works for you.

I don't need the salesman to walk me around but I do want to see and try out the camera before I buy it and so I would buy from a local store. The best buys near me don't have any camera I would want though. I can order them but then it would be no different from ordering from B&H.

Usually policies are stated on the receipt and in terms of the sale and in the store it is usually posted on the wall as well as the receipt. An assumption is not their fault.
