how does this differ from the 17-40. i know that it is 1mm up . from that what is it?

It has image stabilization that is a big difference. Newer technology, you would have to go to one of the review sites to see all the data. Look at Ken Rockwell review on it. kenrockwell.com shows it is sharper.
