Question. I will be traveling to Egypt and Jordan later this month. I enjoy street photography and wonder if anyone has shot in this location. If so did you run into problems taking unposed shots of people and street scenes while there. Will be using a Nikon 28 to 300 lens and a 50mm lens for street photography.

Thanks.

Went to Cairo area last September, then on to Amman Jordan. You should not have any problems in Egypt - people are very friendly, assuming you will be at the larger city(s). But, you may find many Jordanians very reserved (to the point of somewhat snobs) and probably will not want their photograph taken, unless at a tourist stop where everyone kind of expects it. Amman is very safe to walk around at night but did not see a lot of places where people congregated in the city. Cairo the streets come alive after sunset, when it is cooler. Obviously, stay on well-used, populated areas - your hotel or tour guide can direct or assist you. Egypt was very cheap in prices, food ridiculously so, but Jordan was the opposite.

By the way in regards to safety, felt MUCH safer in Cairo and Amman then many American cities. When was the last time you heard of harm coming to an American in these two countries? Wish I could say the same for here - we arrived back home two days before the Las Vegas shootings - 58 dead, 851 injured. Glad we went to Egypt & Jordan instead.

It’s been awhile sine I travelled to Egypt and Jordan but I also found people very friendly and helpful. If you have doubts about taking a photo of someone in. The street I point to my camera and then to the person. Most of the time you will get a smile and an OK. Taking photos Ina fairly busy street is not a problem.

I completely agree with Stardust. We've lived in Egypt for a year and find the people wonderful, friendly, helpful and about as great as you can imagine. I don't know about Jordan. Street photos in Cairo are easy but I do always ask people if I'm doing something that is close and definitely includes them in the photo, it's just like i'd do in the US. In the villages people are even more friendly, if that's possible. There are more people who are shy about cameras but still there are plenty who are happy to share their culture and world with you. My only caution is that it's always best to ask whenever there's a question. As my wife (who is also a photographer) always says as she's going up to some person on the street "what's the worst that can happen? they'll just say no and we'll go look for other scenes"
As for safety, again Stardust is right. This is a very safe place, morning-noon-night. I'm never nervous.
good luck and have fun!

The Middle East is not a safe place to be wondering around. In my view the only safe place to visit would be Israel. Personally I would not take the chance going to Egypt. Jordan might be a little safer. As has already been said, be alert!

No problem with street photography in Egypt, even when pointing your camera 'up close and personal'. Here are some samples:

My wife and I had no issues whatsoever in Egypt or Jordan. Despite dire warnings from some of our guides we frequently went off on our own to explore with camera in hand and never felt unsafe or unwanted in either country. Had we taken the advice of the nay sayers I'd have missed a lot of good shots in both Cairo and Amman.

After reading the replies to this question, I began to get excited about a trip like that.

But, I just checked the US State Department Travel Advisories and suggest you do the same.

Be very careful in both places.

Having traveled to Egypt several years ago, I can tell you that anyplace they let you go, you will be guarded by someone with a powerful weapon. Keep you possessions close at hand, and stay with your tour. Trouble can start easily, and the city is very, very crowded!

To put it bluntly, there ain't no way in hell I would go wandering through any Middle Eastern country except Israel. If you can blend in with the local citizens so you aren't noticeable then you are fairly safe. As an American you are going to stand out like a sore thumb and every radical Muslim in every terrorist group is going to be tempted to pop you a new rectum right in the middle of your forehead. Americans are not safe in the Middle East! If you want to place yourself in a dangerous situation go ahead and do it but if anything happens to you don't come screaming to America to save you.
