Nikon D5100 settings for HDR

Help! Help! Help! I have a D5100 and would like to start taking HDR photos, however, I cannot seem to find the right settings to allow we to use the HDR setting on my camera. I keep getting a message that "that option is not available at the current settings, or the camera's current state."
I cannot figure out what setting is preventing me from using the right settings. I must be missing something... but I don't know what! Just about the time I think I have this camera figured out, I find out that I don't.
I feel so ignorant!!! Anyone have an idea???

It cannot be in Auto. Switch to P, S, A, or M. If you want good HDR, try shooting three or more shots with dark to light exposure. Then you can use a variety of programs to combine them. I was never thrilled with the HDR on my D5100.

Leave the camera in auto-take one photo in raw-down load it to NX 2- make two more copies and process one up 2 exposer steps and one down 2 exposers steps and leave the original as it was taken. Send the three raw images to your HDR program and let the magic begin.

Thank you sarge69, jerryc41, and iamsteven925...

I read some more info and found that I could not use the D5100 HDR settings unless I had the quality on only jpeg, and not RAW/jpeg which is where I had the settings on my camera.
I knew about the Auto setting, but didn't realize that I could not use RAW or the flash. Interesting, I most likely will use the "traditional" way of doing HDR so that I can use RAW. Thank you for your quick response. It is reassuring to have such knowledgeable photographers on the other end of this forum! Thanks again!

Better off doing them in Aperture/Raw/Photomatix
