Message on my camera I can't understand.

Recently on this site I got some advice on an old MC/MD 200 mm lens to fit my Sony A7 camera. As advised, I ordered an adaptor through Ebay. Seem to work OK in
attaching the lens to my camera. However, when I turned it on I got the following message. "Check the lens attachment. If the lens is not supported, you may permit
use of the lens in the custom menu." I have gone through my menu several times. I don't see a custom menu option.

Any advice or suggestions?

I wonder if you have read the instructions book for your camera.

Does Sony have a customer support number? Or an owner forum? Or chat?

My first guess is that this lens/adapter combination doesn't "talk" to the camera. The camera has no idea a lens is attached and therefore is giving you a message that the lens is not attached correctly, or however the camera interprets the issue.

That will most likely inform you of what to do and provide some guidance.

If like my A37 and A58 there should be a setting that "enables shutter release" w/o lens, I will get one out and see where it is on my cams. In the menu, look for the little gear insignia, select that, and "Release w/o lens" should be in section 1 about half way down the list. Just select "Enable" and you should be on your way. You will lose electronic communication with camera, so its like the old days, pure manual....it does work, I set all mine up that way. Hope this helps.

Is there a setting for “release without lens?”

Just to clarify - "Release w/o lens" allows shutter to fire regardless, the loss of elect. communication is due to lens not having that feature. Camera and other electronic coupled lenses will still communicate as always.

Look for a “shoot without lens” option.

I have a Fujifilm X-T20 and when I use a non-communicating lens I have to set my menu to "shoot without lens". I have a Nikon with an assortment of lenses so I bought an adapter to allow me to use all of my Nikon lenses on the Fujifilm in a manually operated fashion.

...in addition to the "release without lens" selection, if your Sony body has IBIS (in body image stabilization) that you want to work with an old lens, you need to go into the stabilization section of the menu and select the focal length of the lens you've mounted, in this case 200mm.

Don't forget to set your "peaking level" and "peaking color". Via Menu, Custom Settings, #2 . This will help you to focus and see depth of focus. Happy Shooting.
