I'm having a little trouble with halos in some of my late evening florida sun photos. Here is an unedited (except for unsharp mask) photo example. Can anyone help with some CS5 or shooting tips? The player in the background is the one I'm concentrating on.

I looked at the full size file of your shot. It does have a minor halo, which I think was introduced in sharpening. There are a number of ways to avoid this.

1. Sharpen with the unsharp mask as usual.

2. Go to edit menu. Fade the effect slightly.

3. drop down lower in the window that opened and in "mode" choose luminosity. This should allow you to sharpen more without halo or ghosting.

Another method is to use high pass sharpening.

1. Create a new layer from the background.

2. In the upper left of the Layer box you can select the mode. Any of the following will work: overlay. soft light, hard light, vivid light. I suggest soft light, because that is the one that will allow you to sharpen the most without introducing artifacts unique to sharpening.

3. Go to filter, other, high pass.

4. In the window that opened for high pass, set the radius by puling the slider to the right. The effect is seen immediately on your picture, allowing you to choose exactly the amount of sharpening you need. Soft light mode will allow you at least a radius of 11, possibly more.

Lastly, is all you have is a halo, and you otherwise really like the picture, you can magnify the image and undertake the tedious task of cloning out the halo from the edges. Admittedly, this takes enough work, that for most people it is a labor of love.

Thanks! It was there before the unsharp mask. I can send another example if you'd like but will try your method! thanks for taking the time to look and reply!!!

If a halo was present before sharpening, I wonder if you have your JPEG in the camera set to maximum sharpening. Even that should probably not create halos. They can be cloned out, but that is very tedious and hardly something you would want to do unless it was for just a few pictures that had exceptional potential.

I have CS5 and CS6 and just checked ACR for CS5 and it doesn't have the CA adjustments in Lens Correction that CS6 has. It was really easy in ACR for CS6 though. Let me know if you'd like the image and I can post it for you.

I started using jeep_daddy and jeepDaddy on most forums as my user name or profile name many years ago. I sold my Jeep CJ7 about 6 months ago when my income became fixed SSDI. I got rid of my motorhome, truck, Jeep, motorcycles, quad, tools, guns, camping equip., fishing tackle etc., and focused on photography. The only thing I miss is my Jeep. I cried when the guy told me that he'd 'take it' without even a lower offer. I actually got choked up and cried. I didn't expect to sell it because I had tried to sell it once before and didn't get any serious calls. This time a guy called me about 20 minutes after I placed the ad and came over with cash. :(

My husband would have cried too. We don't have a lot of toys but his jeep is his. A few fishing poles and four kids in school is all we can handle. I have my photography, he has his jeep. I'd love to see the CS6. I tried to follow the video listed in this thread to correct the photo but with no luck. Love to see yours!

I could have gone a little more on the CA slider because there's just a little purple left on the face but this was just a one minute fix. This was one of the improvements in CS6.

That's me in my CJ7. I sure do miss it.

You can always download and try CS6 for 30 days. You'll get full use of the program including the newest version of ACR.

This likely is too simplistic an answer, but I have found that the halo effect is almost completely a result of sharpening. So what I do, especially with sunset shots where the halo effect can be particularly apparent, is to just back off on the sharpening a bit, aiming at a compromise where I still get some sharpening, but reduced halo effect.

I have PSE 8. How does one "fade"? I don't see an item "fade" under edit. Thanks.

>>>2. Go to edit menu. Fade the effect slightly.

I am shooting with an 85mm Prime Canon Lens. Should I be having the problem with that lens?

A higher quality lens. I shoot only L glass in my canon now. Haven't had the problem since.

I am shooting about %50 of the time with the Canon 85 1.2 L for portraits. I've never had the problem with my Lens.

Sorry about the late reply. Haven't checked this thread in a while.
