I'm thinking "runner up for Darwin Award". Not quite stupid enough to win, though. In the Kruger area, our guide told us of a woman who insisted she had to get out and pee. He kept telling her that they were not in a safe area for that. She kept insisting, so he advised her to go right behind the vehicle. He said that just as she dropped trou and squatted down an ostrich came charging out of the bush towards her. He yelled at her to jump on the back of the vehicle, and they sped down the road, her standing on the bumper and hanging on for dear life, pants to her ankles, the ostrich running down the road after them...... And probably no one was taking photos!!!!

In Botswana on a photo safari we were nearly gored/trampled by an old (and very large) bull elephant in search of a female. We were all in our vehicle, a modified Toyota Land Cruiser, and just trying to sneak by him to get back to our camp before the Park's sunset curfew. He covered the 100 foot distance to us in mere seconds as we spun our wheels in soft sand trying to get away. Finally the tires grabbed and as we were bouncing away with the bull only feet away trumpeting and charging after us the driver yelled out "get pictures, get pictures!"

I'm sure you missed the follow up story about the ostrich that mysteriously died by laughing itself to death.

I'm also sure we'll get some blowback from this as we'll be in Zimbabwe next week.

When you are so intrepid, life has a way to teach you in a harsh way that being stupid also doesn't even help you

Sorry for her, but life's a bitch and then.....Elephants remind you.

In 1986, Peter Davies was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University. On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Peter approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee, inspected the elephant’s foot, and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Peter worked the wood out with his knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot.

The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Peter stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away. Peter never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty years later, Peter was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenage son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Peter and his son Cameron were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Peter, lifted its front foot off the ground, and then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man. Remembering the encounter in 1986, Peter could not help wondering if this was the same elephant.

Peter summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing, and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Peter legs and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly.

Probably wasn't the same elephant.

This is for everyone who sends me those heart-warming bullshit stories.
