I'm trying tp photograph lighting. I can't open the lens unless I focus on some small light in the foreground. is there a better way? I try to use different timing because I don' t know when the lighting will com. any suggestions?

Go to youtube.com and search for "photograph lightning." You'll get more info than you can ever use.

They do make triggers that sell for somewhere around $150 but if you don't have one and don't care to buy one then you can try to catch lightning at night by finding a dark place without any lights in the area then using a wide lens, you can manually focus the lens to near infinity and set a very small aperture then either do repeated 30 second exposures hoping to get a strike or use the bulb function on your camera for an even longer exposure.

I have no idea what you mean by, I can't open the lens (?). Just set you camera to bulb and keep the shutter open long enough, or if you have still a lot of daylight, put on an ND and do the same! I would not "open" the lens too much, but go for a lot of DOF! Its always good to have some interesting foreground elements in the shot as well!
Some of those electronic lightning detector/trigger widgets work OK, but I've not decided myself on which to buy. I have heard. though, that the better ones are also the pricier ones. I like the suggestion of finding a pitch dark place and using the BULB setting. Try various openings, beginning at f/11 and upwards. That's just a SWAG. Have fun... 73... ~jessM
