Night and day. 1 is a push pull zoom, 2 is not. 1 is fairly large, 2 is fairly compact. 1 is a really good lens, 2 is a fantastic lens. They are also different shade of off white. The only things they really have in common are, made by Canon and focal length. I sold my original version so I could buy the new one.

Also, the II ver. has, as part of it's design parameters, the ability to work extremely well with the ver.III extender.

Thanks, that helps. I think I will wait and buy the II.

You didn't mention if you had a full frame or a crop sensor camera. If a crop sensor (eg. 7Dii), a used 300mm f/2.8 would give you in effect a 480mm. I've bought a use lens from B+H with a 9 rating and it works super on my then 7Dii! Unfortunately, I'm now using a full framed 1DXii and so that 300mm is now a true 300mm so I needed to invest in a used 400mm. One more thing. I believe these lenses work better on a full frame than a crop sensor unless you get a lens specifically made for use by crop sensors.

IMO, the BEST you can do on a budget is a used Canon 400mm 5.6 prime and the 1.4X II extender. You will need to be using an f8 enabled body to get to 560mm - about $850-900 if you shop hard. Light weight and fast focus !

I agree completely. This lens is sharper, much lighter, smaller and better built than any budget zoom. One of Canon's best.
