New guy here. Need help. Looking to buy Refurbished Nikon D300 at $999 or D300s at $1350. Which is better buy? Will be using mostly for sports, if that helps.

The only real difference is video: the D300s has it, the D300 doesn't.

Spend your money on a new D7000 for $1096, a much better choice than either at those prices.

Thanks snowbear. I know that's the major difference, but isn't there other improvements as well?

Thanks MT Shooter. I own a D7000. I was looking for an inexpensive backup. Also, I like the weight distribution of the D300 when using the Nikkor 70-200 F2.8. I tried my friend's D300 with my 70-200 and liked the combo, weight wise.

Aside from adding video, the D300s also gives you a slightly faster frame rate when shooting in continuous mode, plus a second card slot that uses SD HC cards as well as the CF slot, and its a bit heavier. Thats about all.

In that case I cannot understand why you wouldn't go with a second D7000, better sensor, better processor, better video, better camera overall, all your accessories will interchange, and the batteries are the same. Sounds like a win-win to me. I got rid of my second D7000 to get the D800E and one of the best features of that combo is the interchangeable batteries. I have 5 of them now.

Thanks. Maybe I'll just get another D7000. I like the higher resolution and ISO than the D300. Something to think about.

The 300s also has slightly better IQ than the 300, but the 7000 is even better. I DO prefer the menu and buttons on the D 300 series but it's just something to get used to.

I shoot with a D300, my wife shoots with a D7000. I really like the 7000 better. Shooting at really high ISO's without much noise is something the D300 cannot do.

I agree, I have the D300 and the D7000. I prefer the D7000. I'm looking to replace the D300 but haven't decided with what yet. Just waiting.......... on maybe the D7100 or D400, if there is going to be one.

It is true that the D7000 is the newer model but that does not necesserily make it "better" in all respects. The 300 and 300s are wonderful cameras that take fantastic images. I have the 300s and would not trade for a 7000(I'm waiting for the D400). The build quality of the D300/300s is "better" than the D7000 in that it is a solid Magnesium body with better weather/dust sealing. It also has a higher FPS shooting speed. If you shoot sports or in "mucky" environs, you could do much worse than a 300 series. I'd choose the model depending if vidio is important.

Thanks everyone for their imput. I've got some things to think about. All I know is that when B&H gets the D300s in stock, they don't last long. So it's still a desirable camera.

Are the D7000's this price everywhere or is this a refurb from Nikon?

That is the price for a new D7000(body only), pretty much everywhere.
