Panosonic just left Nikon and Canon in the dust with the announcement of their new S1, and S1R full frame cameras, targeted at professional photographers.

They are interesting cameras, but not good enough to get people to jump brands. Canon and to a lesser degree Nikon do not need to get people to jump brands to enter this market. Panasonic does.

Panasonic has always been a leader. I had camcorders the DP's favored years ago.
This camera looks great. Price 6k for FF body. Lens 4K to 6k for each lens. Wow!

How does making an announcement leave anybody in the dust?

They look decent but not better than Canon or Nikon. Similar design, not great looking.

hmm, let's see here:
double card slots (one of them a QXD)
18+ native lenses (within first year of release)...this doesn't include sigma lenses...so potentially a lot more
4k60p
dual IS

Those are much better than what canon and nikon have to offer.

Leica already has at least six primes and three zooms for this system. Yes, it will be 2020 before Panasonic adds ten more. In the meantime, Sigma will probably tweak some existing designs for the L mount.

In just ten years, Olympus and Panasonic and others have released over 100 lenses for Micro 4/3. I suspect it will not take long to build out this system.

Panasonic has a history of announcing, listening carefully to trade press and professional photographers’ reactions, and then tweaking the final designs to address concerns. Most of their GHx cameras followed that path. Even after release, they continue to add improvements via free firmware updates and paid upgrades.

This isn’t an earthquake, but it will offer very desirable choices that weren’t there before.

Looks like a mighty fine camera...now we have to wait for them to produce them and see how they actually perform.

Have they mentioned anything about pixel shift...that would be one massive file with tons of resolution.

Panasonic is a leader in the video acquisition business. Their GH4, 5, 5s have been the talk of the reasonable video
and stills shooting world. Their specs are amazing. They specs and price beat my Sony's (which are great) in many features.

Hell, I was a Nikon AND Canon user from 1968 to 2012, and I switched to Panasonic for Micro 4/3! It’s a system that does precisely what I need it to do. The leap of faith was absolutely worth taking.

You’re right, though. Canikon users have lens lockers weighing them down. They don’t want to jump ship for fear of sinking into debt buying new lenses. So Canikon can tease them with the lukewarm solutions they’ve announced.

I’m no longer a Canikon user, but I’m still disappointed in much of what they’ve announced. Most of us who follow these things closely expected a lot more.

Amen.
Despite what some here will say about me and my bias towards m4/3, I really did want them to produce a quality product...that said I know better than to trust Canikon when it comes to mirrorless. Maybe that'll change a few years from now. However in the meantime, this really looks like a nice camera. I just wish I had the funds and that it didn't take so long to come to the market. March is a ways away. Who knows what will be released in the meantime.

Both Panasonic and Sony are video leaders. So’s Canon, at higher levels, but they cripple video and especially audio in their dSLRs. Panasonic and Sony don’t.

I bought my GH4 specifically for hybrid use. It continues to amaze me by NOT getting in my way as I work.
