Bob,

Thanks for the help and your response. I have done quite a bit of research and practice with my new D3400 after the grainy images and think I have found the problem and resolved the issue. I did have my ISO set to auto. So, I changed that to manual and I physically set my aperture instead of allowing the camera to make that decision; my pics were outstanding.

Thanks again,
A. T.

Thanks for your response and suggestions. I have solved the issue; I had my ISO set to auto. I have never used auto settings on my D3400. I use either aperture or shutter priority.

I'm still in route to my home from Jackson Hole WY. and the hotel internet sucks so I can't send any pics; however, I really think I have solved the problem. I went back to the same location where I took the grainy pics and adjusted my ISO, aperture, used a tripod and remote shutter and that made all the difference in the world; wonderful pics. I'm still studying and practicing my ISO and aperture settings but I think I have the general idea in working with the two in manual mode.

Thanks again,
A. T.

Thanks for the reply to my issues. I made some changes to my ISO settings, namely, setting them on manual instead of auto, using a tripod and remote shutter and that made all the difference in the world. Again, thank you so very much for responding to my post and your recommendations.

TriX,

Thanks for the response and the suggestions. I think I solved the problem by setting my ISO and aperture manually, using a tripod and remote shutter. I went back to the same location applying the aforementioned settings and got remarkable results.

Thanks again for your help,
A. T.

2 second delay can help , if you have a cheaper tripod gives a chance for the camera to settle down , usually raise the mirror and turn off image stabilization.

I'm new to DSLR photography, have fallen completely in love with the hobby and am realizing how frustrating it can be. The wife and I are vacationing in Jackson Hole, WY. and we got up at dark this morning to catch the first light for some awesome shots. I get back to the cabin to download my shots and realized that all of my first light shots were grainy; so disappointed. I shot with a D3400 in aperture priority with a Nikon 70-300. I think my problem was shooting freehand instead of using my tripod and not using a slower shutter speed and not paying attention to my ISO. We will try again in tomorrow morning and I will use a tripod.

Now, I will shut my mouth and ask politely for any help regarding this issue.
