“Skill in photography is acquired by practice, not by purchase.”-Anonymous

We all get excited about that new piece of equipment. But it is the time we spend using it that teaches us how to create the images we want.

I have been taking a class at the local community college since 2002, and not missed one semester. It is just fun being around other photographers and we are constantly learning from each other. Also I go on at least two major road trips each year with people who are far better artists then me just to absorb their energy.

So practice makes perfect may apply to us photographers. Although who knows what a perfect photograph looks like?

Well chosen statement.
I'm envious of your ability to travel for photography.

Far too often most people think buying the latest in photographic equipment will make them a better photographer. Everybody has their own idea what a perfect photograph looks like.

You've been taking a class for 16 years?

I agree with what you say about chasing after the next new thing. My main camera, a Nikon Df, is five years old and I still love it. I also have a number of older lenses that are no longer in production, some that went out of production in the 1990s, and still provide very sharp, excellent results. I am sure others have lenses older than what I have that they still use.
I just ordered an AF 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 that went out of production in 1999.

Yes sounds crazy huh! But I really have become friends with the instructor and many of my fellow students who have been taking the class with me for years too. We all share a passion for photography some shooting film and some digital. It’s a great mix and we feed off each other creatively.

And you are never too old to stop learning and we all know it takes a lifetime to master the art of photography.

To the OP! A community college with 32 classes in photography? You took 16 years and every semester.

Yep! I got done with my Masters and was bored just sitting around. My wife very nicely suggested that I find something to occupy my time and suggested I take a class for something I would enjoy instead of something I had to take. So I signed up for a Photo 1 class. Loved it and the people so I took them all and have taken the Advanced Studio Arts Class each semester for so many years I can’t even remember how many times. And I stopped looking at my grades years ago too and don’t care but I make the “Dean’s List” every semester. Fun stuff and the price is right.

I recommend this to everyone. It is especially good to overcome “artist block” as it also encourages you to get out and shoot and in my case get into the darkroom even when I feel lazy.

Maybe it's time to stop taking classes and start taking photographs.
You've been with UHH 4 1/2 years and only posted 1 picture.

Haha! Yea I did take them all including a couple of semesters of the Zone System. The ongoing Studio Arts lets us work on whatever we want which is nice.

Currently I am changing film from Kodak’s TriX which I have used for years to Ilford’s HP5. The TriX is a great film but at about $9 a sheet for 8x10, getting a little too expensive. The HP5 is only about $5 a sheet. Just completed the film exposure and development times. Going to Colorado next week around Telluride with the wife our dog Maggie and some other photographers to try the new film out. Then when I get back I will have the expert eyes of the instructor and my fellow classmates to help refine the prints.

While the image capture process is a very personal experience, especially with a large format camera, the print refinement is open to suggestions from all for me. That’s just another reason I keep going back.

That is my choice what I post. I shoot film exclusively and don’t have many images scanned. Silver gelatin prints lose something in the transition in my opinion.

I like to talk about the enjoyment and philosophy of photography here on UHH not post prints.

It is people with wise cracks like yours that sometimes make me even question that.

For better or worse I would actually choose to spend the tuition for a camera.

He already has the camera that he uses, know and enjoys.
He's going for the immersion, camaraderie, like minded company, artistic influence and education.
I'd give him some extra kudos for the dedication.

To the OP. Your class is sounding more like a community collage sponsored club. Not that it's a bad thing, it just sounds more like a club instead of a class.
