BTW, I've thought of getting a small but powerful pocket sized pistol like a little Beretta Pico,

YES! On the pepper spray. You can explain that it's really a dog deterrent.
NO! NO! NO! On the gun. *I* believe we have the right to carry, but the government doesn't. Red or Blue. Use it, and you'll spend the last of your life in too close proximity with the likes of the people you were trying to protect yourself from.
Carry a sturdy cane, along with the pepper spray.

Agree

Another thought is to carry a small air horn - at 115 db - it hurts and draws a lot of attention -

They can be purchased at Walmart - boat stores - marina's - online - etc... and to my knowledge, there is no legal issue with carrying this...

In some states, carrying concealed without a permit is a felony. I believe Illinois is one of them; New Jersey may be another.

If you are an active or a retired law-enforcement officer who is or retired in good standing and qualify as required by your department or once a year, you can get a concealed-carry permit that's good nationwide. A federal law called the Law-Enforcement Officer Safety Act was enacted about ten years ago.

If you don't qualify for LEOSA, your best bet is to get as many non-resident concealed-carry permits as you can and do not travel into states that you don't have a permit for and who don't have reciprocity arrangements with the states from where you have a permit. I suggest starting with Florida; they issue non-resident permits and have reciprocity agreement with several states. New Jersey, New York, and California are three of the states you will want to stay out of unless you're LEOSA qualified -- they are decidedly anti-gun and that attitude is, unfortunately, reflected (by order) in their law-enforcement officers.

If used, I’m sure some DA somewhere, probably California, will prosecute you for damaging the ears of your assailant, they will apply for workman’s comp, you will face a federal suit for violating the rights of the perpetrators to assault you and a civil suit by the perpetrators for causing ptsd. I live in Texas where you still have the right to defend yourself.

Lived in Illinois for most of my life. If you are carrying without a concealed carry permit and are caught with it, but not in the commission of a crime, they look at intent. If they determine there was no intent other than personal protection, they will plead it down to a misdemeanor and let you off with community service, but you will probably not get your gun back. But back to the ops post, I have traveled extensively in Europe and I warn people not to take anything expensive with them. Alway hear about stuff stolen out of hotel rooms. I go into a local phone store shortly after arriving (they are at every couple of blocks and at a lot of airports and train stations) and pick up a cheap prepaid phone so I don't have to take my iphone out of my pocket.

Forget the pistol it all happens to quickly and they are gone. Their is no solution to avoid the thieves if they want to try and grab your camera. The best advice is to be Street wise and remain alert . If people approach you for help rebuff then quickly. If they persist yell at them to go away. Yell very loudly and persist with yelling until they leave you alone. Don't be embarrassed they will bolt if they are thieves. They don't want attention. Watch out for people touching you or if you sense a group moving in closely to you, start yelling at them. It has worked successfully for me for many years and scared off the potential thieves. I swear very aggressively. Good luck, stay safe

Insure your gear. No sense in getting yourself injured over things that can be replaced.

Didn't need it but used a cable in a strap for my camera about a month ago in Barcelona. Didn't need it but was worth $30.00 at B& H

Even the Thieves! A lot of Europe (inc. sadly the U.K.) has gone soft on Crime. Give the perps a seeing too - perhaps even talk to them in words they don't understand and the Social Police will happily spend more time prosecuting you than real Police will be able to spend on you.

I believe San Francisco is getting there also.
