Requirements:

Rugged
Fits in a pocket
Light weight
Water resistant
Zoom lens with ability to photograph scenery, wildlife, birds. He won't blow the prints larger than 8 1/2 x 11, most will be smaller.

Hopefully y'all will come up with several that I can send him specs and reviews for. It'll be his choice on my dollar (hopefully under $500).

I thank you, and my son thanks you.

May I suggest the Fujifilm Finepix XP130, available from B&H and elsewhere for about $200.

I backpacked for years with either a Nikon F or a Pentax Spotmatic in my bag. Neither were particularly weatherproof, no zoom lens, etc. Very simple. I think I paid about $80 for the Pentax with a 50mm lens, and another $75 for a 135mm lens. Used a Kuban Hitch to attach it to my chest - always ready to take a shot when the opportunity presented itself. And I used a Bolex "Praying Mantis" macro/low level camera support for some interesting perspectives.

My how times have changed. . .

Consider Olympus TG-5.

I have the Fuji Finepix and it works well. However, if I were to do it over I would get the Oly TG 5. More robust and more features. As an aside I also carry a few extra batteries and a solar charger. All very light on long hard pack trips.
