Hi Guys, I'm thinking of buying a tele converter to use with my D7200 and my Sigma 150-500mm lens...I've always been a bit confused about which lenses on Nikon cameras will work OK with a converter...Do you think this combo will work OK..The converter I'm thinking about is a 1.4X...I'd also like to use it on my 70-300mm if possible...

Read the paperwork for the tele-converter, or check the Nikon website - it will tell you what lenses are compatible.

Your D7200 can autofocus a lens / lens+extender combination with a maximum effective aperture of f/8, see note on page 307 of your D7200 manual. Some teleconverters cannot be physically be mounted to the lens, where the 70-300 might be one of these situations. Given the Sigma is f/6.3 at the maximum zoom, you should expect problems when trying to extend this lens and retain autofocus. These technical details should be thoroughly investigated before purchasing or renting the equipment.

Teleconverters are matched for specific lenses. Check the OEM website or send tech support an email.

AF performance and sharpness both take quite a hit. TCs are intended for fast, (f2, F2.8 or F4) prime lenses, and a small handful of zooms - the 200-400 and the 70-200 come to mind. Lenses that are F5.6 or F8 at the focal length you intend to use with a TC are going to be challenging to use. I wouldn't use a TC with either lens.

As others have already said, check the data and make she the parts will fit. I have several of them. Some will fit everything and some only fit special lenses. Also be aware of issues with no auto focus and losing a few f stops.

The Sigma TC 1.4 will fit this lens and will focus at 500mm which is f6.3 moving the aperture to f8, however IQ will suffer. I had this combination lens and TC on a D800 and sold the lens in favor of the Sigma 150-600mm Sport which I use with the 1.4 TC on a D850.

I have used a converter with this size lens and highly suggest that you use a tripod also.

You will lose sharpness, lens speed, and at some point the ability to autofocus. On a crop sensor, you already have an equivalent focal length of 700mm which is like a 14X telescope. Reaching out that far you will need a rock steady tripod and will have to deal with haze on distant shots. I'd prefer to crop the photo instead of stacking more glass into the setup.

The MOST important point here is that Teleconverters are NOT universal. Best (unless you want broken glass) to have one matched to your specific lens. Also, as Gene51 points out, they are really intended for the faster glass. I use mine for lenses such as a 400/2.8. Personally, I would NOT consider using one with either lens the OP stated. Best of luck.

I would give effect on IQ and effective lens speed a second look before I considered this.

My recommendation for you is to maximize your IQ and shoot the 150-500 @450mm and f8 and CROP and if necessary, use well applied pixel enlargement software. - same with the 70-300.
