Was lucky enough today to receive the first of 5 Nikon contributions to my 2020 AL-CA-NE Photo Expedition (the Z7 and Z6 bodies with FTZ adaptors will follow when available). This new 500mm lens is even lighter than I had anticipated. it balances extremely well on the D850 and shoots extremely well hand held. Focus is instant! VR is instant! I cannot wait to get a chance to get it out in the field to test it out. Really wish I had gotten it last week to take to the Slippery Ann Elk Refuge with me last Sunday, would have loved to try it out there!
Here are a few unboxing photos for those wanting and early actual look at one of these long awaited babies! I apologize for the quality as these were taken with a cell phone while unboxing.

Great news, and like a kid at Christmas. I am following your adventure, thank you so much for the postings. BTW, how's the trailer coming??

Trailer is coming along well, will be installing the propane system this weekend since I took last weekend off to shoot. Will be field testing the trailer in May 2019 for the first time.

Here are a couple of quick grabs with it.

The Northern Hotel is about 3 1/2 miles away in downtown Billings. The building on the cliff is TV transmission towers about 11 miles away. Both shots straight out of camera Jpegs taken at F5.6 wide open and hand held. Download is available with EXIF data intact. Highly compressed Jpegs to allow for the upload here.

Anxious for your opinion on the 500 vs the 200-500 for sharpness for birds or other wildlife. I would assume the 1.4 would be much better on the 500.

I do not shoot the 200-500mm F5.6 myself, I use the Sigma 150-600mm Sport lens as it is weather sealed. I do have the Nikon in my rental inventory and may find an opportunity to compare the two, but I have the sneaking suspiscion the 500 will outperform the 200-500 significantly primarily due to the NANO glass coatings and the Phase Fresnel lens element.

Thanks for the reply! I also shoot the 150-600 G2 and feel it is comparable to the 200-500, but slower focus in low light.

On my D500 I think that scales up to be a 750mm, that is some serious reach! Now can someone show me how to start a Go Fund Me page?
