I shoot both. But I work with RAW and never tried to edit a jpeg. Not redundant.

Linda from Maine:

I don't exactly know what you mean by batch processing (we may have different interpretations as to what it is), but PhotoShop Elements lets you process multiple RAW files in Adobe Camera RAW. I do it all the time. The secret is to open the RAW files in ACR and press the "select all" button to do the processing. If you select a different photo from among those you opened, remember to press the "select all" button again before exporting to PSE.

Agree. I am not in a rush usually. It so quick and easy to export raw to JPG (or Tiff etc,) from Lightrooom. Always always go with Raw.

I'm not a pro so I don't need jpg for that, and I only rarely need to share immediately. I don't need unprocessed photos cluttering up my hard drive. When I started using Lightroom it was so handy for file management, and I can convert to jpg those images I want to share. I was a little nervous at first but it's nice to have only one set of photos to go through per shoot.

It turned out to be redundant for many of us. I just use the raws for any serious editing so the only thing I was using the jpegs for was for quickly viewing the shoot and culling out the non-keepers. THEN I got turned on to FastStone Image viewer which displays our raws perfectly and makes for an ideal everyday image viewer in general for all file types. It makes culling the non-keepers so fast too. I have it set to delete a photo with a single click of the delete key. So for many of us life is so much cleaner simpler, and faster just shooting raw files.

I like to shoot raw and jpeg so I can quickly get a rough copy online as well as for social media

I shoot raw (large) + jpeg (fine). Use the jpegs to quickly get shots out on social media. Take the raw files into Lightroom Classic CC for post processing.

Thanks, Ernie. I just downloaded FastStone viewer and it is an amazingly simple piece of freeware that makes culling unwanted or superfluous NEFs easier than I’ve yet experienced. Will save a lot of Lightroom time. Much obliged.

Hi Ernie Hi Jeff - Yes, Faststone is good - so good I donated. But there is also XnView (also free) which is similar and which I have used for years. But with either of these progs what you do with RAWs you can equally do with JPGs.
I only use my RAWs if I find I need that bit extra DR or WB or Tone during the development stage. That rarely happens. After the development stage comes the real editing including using layers and filters, which is the same in PhotoPlus whether the start point was RAW or JPG. Once I export or save (TIFF), i delete the RAW straight away. I am also now thinking that I could delete the original JPG as well.
