No, no, no. Don't bother organizing them BEFORE you put them in lightroom. LR is the most powerful photo organizing program you can get. Just dump everything in there and use LR for the organizing. That is what LR was designed for.

Before importing your pics , its better to organize them first,e.g.. , travel, wildlife, family, etc. Then when you add them to Lightroom it will make sense. I to recommend Scott Kelby's book also. Read the beginning on importing before you do anything. Also You tube has some vids on the B&H channel by Tim Grey. Watch them also. Also a lot of good vids on post processing on you tube. Good luck & have fun.

The problem with the approach you describe is that the categories overlap. What do you do when you take wildlife photos while traveling, or have family photos on a trip? I think what makes more sense is to file photos by year, with subdirectories for each event. For example:

2018
2018-02-18 Class Reunion
2018-02 -22 Art Museum
2018-02-27 Flower Macros

Then, let LR do further organization with keywords, titles, geotagging, etc.

With this reply and others, I think the OP is starting to get the idea that, although LR is not difficult, just how each person handles it is different. This poster and many others on UHH like to organize by date. Although the date (mostly the year) is usually my first key word, my folders are more subject based. I don't care if a flower was shot in Alaska, or Greece or the Lake District in the UK. For me the main thing is that it is a Yellow Flower. I'm going to put it in the Yellow Flowers folder. My way isn't the right way, it's just my way. LR lets you make decisions in many different directions, and if, after using it for awhile, you find your system is not working for you, you can change it. If everything is keyboarding with every possible way to find it, very little will get lost. Lightroom is fun. It's almost like a computer game except the outcome is real.

Hello fellow Hedge hogs,

Question:
I have been using Nikon NX-D for many years, and have finally realized that I need a better organization system!
How do you transfer ALL the pictures from NX-D to the Lightroom program. Soon going to purchase a refurbished Nikon D-810, and I want to start fresh.
My D-3000 has served me well, but time to move to Full Frame.
Shooting Sports(Soccer) mostly.

Thanks in advance. I Appreciate all your posts, as I read this Forum everyday! All advice will be appreciated!
Hello fellow Hedge hogs, br br Question: br I hav... (show quote)

You still unload your photosfrom camera to your hard drive. Create a directory and put them in it..... you then import to lightroom. Lightroom keeps a set of pointers telling it where the photos are on your hard drive...
