Dealing w/ high ISO noise?

I'm on Adobe's Photography Program...wondering if I need some kind of add-in or supplemental program that will help me reduce high ISO noise. Today I almost exclusively use Lightroom and haven't been successful in solving this with the existing tools (or my knowledge of them). I have Photoshop available...rarely go there, but I could. Have become aware of programs that will act as Photoshop add-ins (e.g. DeNoise) to address this??? Maybe effective tools exist in Photoshop / Lightroom and I just haven't figured it out???

Any experience you can share?

Thank you!

Check Topaz's DeNoise. It is the best one I have been able to find. It works as a plug in with your Photoshop.

The only experience I can share is that similar to visible grain in high ISO films, noise is just part of the equation when one starts using high ISO settings in digital. Learn that it's just part of the image when using high ISO settings. Though, exposure techniques can reduce the amount of visible noise.

With the seemingly inordinate objection to noise in images, I wrote an article on noise and its reduction. https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/user-page?upnum=1537

I like both Topaz and Nik plugins. The original Nik suite of plugins was free. Since it was purchased by DXO, the 2nd generation is now $69 I believe. Not sure if you can still find the original release at no charge - perhaps someone else knows...

Edit: this link says that it has the original NIK download at no cost, but I haven’t personally tried it: https://phlearn.com/tutorial/intro-nik-filters-photoshop/

There is a setting under detail in Lightroom to adjust noise out, but, as with any program, it will "soften" your photo. The way I control ISO noise is to test the noise levels of my camera and set the auto ISO to not exceed the maximum ISO that is acceptable to me. Not knowing which camera you use, simply google controlling ISO on (whatever camera you are using). Good luck.

I prefer DeNoise. You can likely find an up-to-date 2017-2018 bake-off showing the results of Topaz vs other current software.

But, before you go and buy more software, can you provide some examples of your current issues, as well as a screen shot of your noise settings in LR? Some subtle adjustments in Sharpening and Noise Reduction settings in LR can have a significant impact on an image. PS is even more advanced in capability and complexity of the options. I don't have a specific author or video to reference, but after spending time watching videos and demonstration examples on utube, my own understanding and usage of the LR parameter settings were greatly improved.

A useful example of a) the original, b) the processed result and c) the LR settings all attached for download should help to give ideas on next steps using LR or PS alone.

Are you shooting raw? Which camera are you using? How high are the ISO settings? Can you post an example image? If, for example, you were using a Canon 60D with a slow lens in very low light situation and an extended ISO of 12800, the noise when recovering detail in deep shadow areas may still be visible no matter what tool you used to reduce it. More detailed information will help us pinpoint exactly how or if you can resolve your specific issue. While general suggestions are always helpful, they may not be the right answer for your particular problem.

You can attach them here as a response, use <reply> or <quote reply> to enable the ability to add attachments. Given your estimated timing, you might also start a new post, when the images are available, within the Post Processing section where several very talent UHH members perform magic on images.

Here's a raw file that is an example of somewhere I would like to reduce noise.

I seem to be having trouble attaching a raw file. I will give it one more shot...

Sorry for the multiple notes. I haven't been able to attach a raw file to this message.

There's a 20MB limit to attachments, that effectively prevents nearly all RAW files except for older, smaller sensor bodies. You might try just the screen capture and the processed results from LR as they tell us what your option settings that created the image.
