Hello Photography Colleagues;
I have a 12 yr old 8 pix Leica C-Lux 3 which is beginning to wear out. For serious shooting, I have a D500 with two F lenses; this is heavy and I would like a pocket camera for snapshots for dinner parties, etc. Am looking at the new C-Lux 3 or 4 as well as the Sony 100 V or VI, all priced similarly. I want small, light, quality glass, with a normal zoom. Any suggestions on criteria for me to decide would be appreciated. Thanks.

For a pocket camera, I use my cell phone. The phones on todays market have incredible cameras and they are always with us.

Do you have a camera store near you that may have either of those two cameras? A little touchy feely goes a long way. If not read the technical reviews on photo sites, reviews of actual users and then look for sample images. I'm sure some Hogs on here have both of the cameras you desire and will give more appropriate user comments. However, either one will give you great performance and quality photos. I'm looking at the smaller Sony's as a backup or even a primary camera when I travel......Good Luck

Pix count is up, but I want better glass than a phone. Yes, getting better, but not there yet. Glass the size of a kernel of corn and quality of a soda bottle does not interest me. If I wish to accept a muddy picture with a flash that only works sometimes and inconsistent auto focus without the convenience of a zoom, I'll borrow my wife's Korean-made phone. However, I appreciate your input and thanks for your comment.

Thanks, Blaster;
We have one camera store in our area that has several models of the Sony pockets which I have handled. The VI is just out. They overwhelmingly recommend the Sony over several other pockets including the pricier Nikons and Canons. I have only seen the new Leicas online. And, similar to you, travel is a factor for convenience.
Thanks for your input.

I have a Sony RX100 V2 and find it perfect for the events/activities you mentioned...hard to go wrong with today's better pocket cameras.

I’ve been hunting for a good pocketable compact too and have shunned the Sony because of the horribly comples menus. Instead, I opted for the Lumix ZS100 because of the Leica lens (2.8 at normal focal length and smaller f stop at 250 mm zoom). Another option is the Lumix LX10 with a 24-72mm faster (1.4) Leica lens.

You might want to check dp review’s comparison of compact cameras for 2018.

I use the Sony RX-100 VI and have blown up prints to 13X19 inches without problems, I also have the original RX-100 and have also blown up prints to 13X19 without problems. These cameras are small and fit in your pocket and anouther advantage you get over the cell phone is they have Zeiss lenses the original RX-100 goes from 24-100mm and the VI goes from 24-200mm.

In a pocket camera I want a really long range zoom of high quality cause it is going to be the only camera I carry. That is why I carry two pocket camera's with me all the time on vacation. The Sony 100 II (cause it is the only one with a 1.8 speed throughout the zoom range of 28-100 mm and it has a HOT SHOE, no other Sony 100 has one) and the Sony HX-90V with a 24-720 Zeiss zoom lens and a pop up viewfinder. I put each of these camera's into a belt pouch and I am hands free and am able to take any shot I need.

A quick story. I just returned to the States from a river cruise on the Rhine. Fabulous trip for photography. My Sony a73 with the 24-105 f4 lens was the fanciest “rig” on the boat. Admired by all, who made the uninformed statement that I must be getting great photos with such a fancy camera. I held my tongue.

As I stood on the upper deck taking photos of castles, the lady beside me admired my camera. She was shooting with a version of the Sony 100. She allowed me to heft her camera, which was as small and light as a feather. I was amazed, knowing that the camera takes great photos. The lady then hefted my camera and said she preferred hers over mine.

The Sony RX100 Models 3, 4, and 5 should work fine. They each have relatively large apertures which is important when photographing indoors or in low light outdoors. The Model 6 has a longer zoom range, but the smaller widest aperture handicaps you in many situations. The image quality from the RX100 models is superior to that from the LUMIX models--that is why they cost more.

It depends on what you mean by "normal" zoom. The Sony RX100 vi and the Panasonic Lumix ZS100 or ZS200 are pocketable. Since you mention the Sony RX100 V and VI I assume you are interested in a longer zoom than the usual 24-74 range of most pocketables. If you don't need the 200mm plus range but feel 75mm or so is too short you could also look at the Canon G7X ii. It goes to 100mm.

Seems like the Sony and the Leica have the tied votes, even with the complicated Sony menu. The Lumix, I know, has a Leica lens, but why not then get the Leica which is a better body and a far better reputation as a photography brand. Simply, Panasonic is not up to the quality I want to supplement my Nikon. Still deciding, but leaning to the new C-Lux.
