Finding few birds during my photobirding this afternoon, a did catch a quick flash of a gray butterfly from the corner of my eye. I quickly zoomed in to 500 mm and 1/2500 sec. at f/7.1 with my Nikon 200-500 and snapped off a couple of images of this very small creature (13-17 mm long). Because of the bright sun in my eyes, I really couldn't tell what I had until I loaded the images in my computer and opened them in Lightroom. The image was very contrasty and much larger than the attached crop of the full frame, but I was pleasantly surprised with what I saw when I lowered contrast and balanced the light in Lightroom. My research indicates this is a Gray Hairstreak, a species native to Orange County, CA. Hope you like it. Download the attached original for best viewing. The image is at least 3 times the size of the real thing.
Nice.
Looks right for Gray Hairstreak.
I don't think I've ever seen one with it's wings open.
Rick:
Thanks for looking and for confirming my research. I’m mostly a birder, so I don’t really know the butterflies and moths. Thanks to the internet, I was able to make a good guess. I’m not sure that this specimen was really lit on the leaf. It was flitting quickly from plant to plant so I set a fast shutter speed to freeze whatever I was able to shoot and used a medium fl-stop for a little more DoF. I got three shots, two of which were pretty sharp, but all three were essentially “in flight”. Just lucky to get the wings open. Thanks again and have a nice day.
More of your excellent work!
UTMike: Once again, thanks for your kind remark. Have a good day.
