Here's another good example of why solid citizens should have firearms.

The police, although excellent most of the time, are there to solve the crime and / or clean up the mess. It's rare for them to on the site to stop the crime before it actually happens.

Firearms certainly didn't help this 92 year old woman who was gunned down in her own home by the Atlanta police. The police didn't stop the crime, but committed it and then tried to cover it up.

Quote:
Kathryn Johnston (June 26, 1914 - November 21, 2006)was an elderly Atlanta, Georgia woman who was shot by undercover police officers in her home on Neal Street in northwest Atlanta on November 21, 2006, where she had lived for 17 years. Three officers had entered her home in what was later described as a 'botched' drug raid. Officers cut off burglar bars and broke down her door using a no-knock warrant. Police said Johnston fired at them and they fired in response; she fired one shot out the door over the officers' heads and they fired 39 shots, five or six of which hit her. None of the officers were injured by her gunfire, but Johnston was killed by the officers. Police injuries were later attributed to "friendly fire" from each others' weapons.

One of the officers planted marijuana in Johnston's house after the shooting. Later investigations found that the paperwork stating that drugs were present at Johnston's house, which had been the basis for the raid, had been falsified. The officers later admitted to having lied when they submitted cocaine as evidence claiming that they had bought it at Johnston's house. Three officers were tried for manslaughter and other charges surrounding falsification and were sentenced to ten, six, and five years respectively.

Maybe we should take guns away from the Police.

Based on Wabbit's post:

"The police, although excellent most of the time, are there to solve the crime and / or clean up the mess. It's rare for them to on the site to stop the crime before it actually happens."

that might not be such a bad idea.

In the UK police don't carry guns (mostly) and there are gun laws. I'm not saying our laws are better than than the US but I know which I prefer.

Like 'viscountdriver' I feel a lot safer knowing that the UK Police (generally) do not carry firearms. So if you ever see someone carring a gun you know they are the bad guys.

I too would feel much safer if the POLICE didn't have guns. Police officers are some of the stupidist people on earth.

If someone breaks into your house you should I guess call a "Professor". The "Stupidist" comment is one of the most offensive comments that I have ever seen. I hope a Police Officer never has to risk his or her life for you or one of your loved ones. You may at that time change your opinion. SAD

What do the Police there do when they see someone with a gun robbing someone or shooting others, Say, "Please don't do that", what do they do?

They call headquarters and have a gun delivered to them.

I can't speak for the USA because I don't know but in the UK police are not stupid. This is because there are very many more applicants than jobs so they are able to pick the best, some of whom have a university degree. The pay is good and after 30 years there is a decent pension and they are young enough to do another job.
That's not to say there are not some bad apples and over officious cops.
Having said all that, very few crimes are solved and if you are burgled the chance of getting your goods back are low.

That's because they're too smart and know better to not get involved.

No it isn't. It's because they are under rescourced with cut backs and prioritise crimes. If you are murdered chances are the murderer will be caught but if you are burgled very little time can be given to it.
