I am looking for a tripod, it can be used and cosmetics do not matter. I have a good tripod head which I like so I just need a tripod. I have two requirements: 1) it should be sturdy, 2) it has to extend to around 66" without extending the center column ( I want to take pictures on a rock solid platform ). Any thoughts or ideas? This is a fabulous forum so I know I will get great advice.

Take a look at the VanGuard AltraPro 263AT. It's not the lightest but I bought is for it's versatilit and price. it's very sturdy and provides great useage. Great for photo and video and macro. Goes quite high and very low

I ordered my Alta Pro263 last week, and will get it tomorrow. Can't help you yet, but hope it serves my purpose. To me it sounds better than a similar Mafratto, but more versatile as far as the movement of the center arm. Good luck.

You should look into a Feisol tripod I use the 3471 very steady carbon fiber no center post the height is great as I am 6 and it is high enough for my height. If you need a center post they also sell one but I find it is not needed for my height. It is not the cheapest but a fried of mine who is a pro turned me on to this brand and I am very happy with it. They do have a web site so you can check them out. Hunts photo sells them also.

That looks like my Vanguard Tracker 4 with the addition of the pistol grip and the net. I added the pistol grip to mine - nice feature.
