I have a canon 580 ex II and would like to increase the range for shooting birds. Are any of the extenders superior to the others and why?

The Better Beamer by Visual Echoes works well.

The Better Beamer is a favorite with many birders.

If the birds are usually in the same location when you are shooting, I get better results with remote mounting of my flash closer to the birds and behind a large flash diffuser (a white sheet works fine).

I use Pocket Wizards (FlexT5 and MiniT1) to fire the flash which allows me to move and/or hide when shooting.

I also "stretch" my telephoto lens when possible by using a radio remote shutter release (Vello) on the camera (to get the camera closer to the birds (without a photographer to scare them away). I can hide the camera better this way and sit in a more comfortable location with a pair of binoculars and trigger the camera & remote flashes whenever a bird is in the location.
See: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/749989-REG/Vello_RW_C1_FreeWave_Wireless_Remote_Shutter.html

Enjoying a discussion in a car parked over 200 feet away or listening to the radio makes waiting long periods for the right shot so so much easier.

I have been using the Betterbeamer for several years now and it works great. I recently had a situation where I did not want the reflected light from the open frame of the Better Beamer and covered it with black paper. I just ordered the Harbor Digital XT Flash Extender to solve that problem and get a more compact design.

A friend of mine flashed a couple of turkeys once. They were not impressed.
