New Tamron 18-400.
Its range is almost perfect for competitive swimming events.
I got one in April of this year for an Alaskan land/cruise trip because when on my last Alaskan trip my 55-300mm just didn't pull in the critters quite as close as I'd liked. I love this new lens and it's rarely off my Nikon 5300 camera unless I put on my Sigma 10-20 wide angle for landscapes. I'm no "pro" and the pictures taken with the 18-400 were wonderful. I would recommend the lens to anyone looking for an inexpensive zoom that will also get the 18-100mm shots.

Has anyone been following the new Tamron 18-400 F 3.5-6.3, or better, has anyone purchased one?
I have one and am quite pleased.
Just a comment before you get overwhelmed by negative comments. I recently attended a 2 hour talk given by a Tamron sales and technical manager and part time professional photographer. When discussing various lenses he said that Tamron makes more lenses than Canon, Nikon, Fugi, Sony etc put to gather. They are the worlds largest lens manufacturer (note that they make more than camera lenses including about 75% of the security camera lenses used). He said you would be surprised how many lenses they make for the major camera manufacturers but he would not disclose who they were obviously ( if he did they would not be able to mark them up 40%).
Now that I have invited the negative comments just let me say, yes he was a paid salesman and offered no proof of his statements. I have no desire to argue what I heard. You make up your own mind.
Good luck on your decision.
I love mine on my 7D mkll ! I've included some examples of things I've shot with the 18 - 400 . and yes the Heron and the Egret might have been a touch sharper with my Canon 100 - 400 II but it does a great job with less weight and more versatility . It is an excellent travel lens and for family outings it was even short enough to get into a MLB Game , hoping I can get it into Lambeau Field for a Packer Game.
.
I have this lens and used it with a 7D MKII, used it to shoot a few football games from the sidelines. I shot from the sidelines, all up and down sidelines. The photos were just not as sharp as shooting with L glass. Photos ok just off a slight amount, I used it even in the rain because it and the camera are weatherproof? Maybe be a good walk around lens but not that great for sports, even if right on top of the action. My Canon 70-200 f/4 makes the Tamron look like a toy, not a real lens. Just my own opinion.

I agree with you. I have this lens and the EF 70-200mm f/4 IS. The 70-200 is far superior but as a general purpose walk around lens the 18-400 will fill the need for many people, including me. I'm taking my recently purchased one on a trip to Halifax NS next week to lighten the load.
I have had this lens for a couple of months and love it. It is quite possibly the best lens ever made. I have not been disappointed with this lens yet and I am very critical. The auto focus is really good the image quality is amazing. I would recommend this lens to anyone, anytime.

I own the 18-400 and it's quite good for a superzoom. I use mine on vacation when I don't want to carry around a lot of gear. But, "quite possibly the best lens ever made"? Much more than a little bit of hyperbole.
Have had mine for several months. Bought it for family outings like Disney World when I want to travel light as I'll be walking all day and am shooting memories as opposed to well thought out compositions. The zoom range is phenomenal at 27-600mm 35mm equivalent and the quality is very good. Here's the link to a pcmag review where it gets an excellent rating:
https://www.pcmag.com/review/358561/tamron-18-400mm-f-3-5-6-3-di-ii-vc-hld?source=autosuggest . It does have a couple of quirks to it, like there is no focus manual override, but an OK compromise for the flexibility. I have no hesitation in recommending it.
Thanks. I did look at several good and fair and inputs.
