What is the latest on whether a monopod is allowed in carry-on luggage on international flights? Thanks for help. We leave today.

I cary my monopod all the time. I have an OBEN four-section monopod and a Manfrotto ball head. The monopod slides into a side pocket on my Manfrotto pack and the head tucks away nicely inside. When I take the pack through airport security it is clear I am a photographer given the contents of the bag and once past TSA no airline has ever given me a problem.

I carry my monopod through the airport. I have never had a problem with TSA or American Airlines.

Thanks to all for the replies. I didn't want to have to sacrifice my monopod like I did my sweet little Swiss Army knife a couple years back when they changed the regs again.

Well, too late to do anything about it now. A friend of mine, who travels a lot, found the ideal solution. He had a friend of his make a cane/walking stick handle that fastens to the top of the monopod. He pretends to use it as a cane when in the airport and boarding the plane. never has a problem. TSA may have an issue with monopods, but they apparently are sympathetic to people who need help walking.

So if you use your monopod as a "walking stick" (cane), wheelchair helpers will rush at you and get you through TSA more quickly! LOL

I researched this last month prior to a trip to Italy. Domestically, TSA seems to be fine with monopods and travel tri-pods in carry-on luggage (I've done this many times). Not necessarily so in EU however. There were mixed reports on multiple websites. As an aside, my small travel umbrella gets my bag searched every time through security in Amsterdam airport so I now take it out and place in the security bin prior to screening. Based on this regular experience with a tiny umbrella, I chose to check my bag with monopod rather than have the hassle of returning to check the bag. YMMV.

I recently flew from Naples to Crete, then from Santorini to Madrid with a monopod in my carry on. No issues. I actually did use it as a walking stick on the trails along the Amalfi Coast and was very glad I had it.

I have to laugh because I certainly thought they'd be outlawed as potential weapons. So when I had to fly with mine I opened it up and used it as a cane walking toward the xray machine. I had a bit of banter with the guy after all my stuff went through, grabbed my bag and walked off with no apparent need of a cane. The agent yelled after me "Sir! You forgot your cane!". Boy was I red faced.

I bought a cane handle, screwed on an arca type plate, attached it to my monopod and it becomes my "cane". Never had anyone give my personal 'assistive' device a second look.

Happy shooting
