I am a public speaker by trade for 35 years and i would agree with all who mentioned Toastmasters as a starting point. It is not intimidating for most people and frankly can be a lot of fun. If you find you enjoy it i would highly recommend joining the NSA (National Speakers Association) in Tempe, AZ. You will learn volumes from those who have been speakers for years. You do have to have a small resume of speaches to submit though. I have taken numerous speaking classes and have found them for the most part useless.

Used to be afraid of speaking in public. Affected my grade in high school when we had to give oral reports. About half way through my navy career I was sent to a one month instructor training class. It was rough the first week or so. Used to practice speaking at home by lining our daughters teddy bears up in the laundry room and practicing my reports. Helped me immensely. Any ol' port in a storm as they say.
LOL - I too got over the jitters in instructor training in the Navy - best course I had - taught at Naval Air Technical Training Command - Memphis '75 ~ '78
