She lives on the gate. I think she's going to have a lot of babies. I hope none come into the house! She has spent all month caring for the cocoons, so I don't have the heart to destroy her or them. God is in all things.

nice pics. it's a shame you couldn't get the angle on her to show her hourglass.

Nice pics, it reminds me of the red back spider that we have here in Aus, I wonder if they aree related?

Hey Mula,
They are related. Severe red back bites require a dose of anti-venom, to avoid possible fatal results.

Good for you! Since you know that she is there you will be careful when you are around the area so there is no need to kill her.

Hey Molly,
The only problem there is, once they hatch, you will have hundreds of the little beggars running around, trying to find a dark spot to set up house. If you have little kids, grandkids or pets that don't know that they can make you sicker than heck if you get bit, then what do you do ?

Here she is with the hourglass. She isn't upside down very often, and lately, she hasn't been out in the open for me to photograph her. Maybe she tired of me poking around in her domain!

You have a point there.

that's a great shot but now you have it squash the momma and get rid of those eggs.

Really, I don't think I can do that. There is a lot of area to spread out on. I grew up on a farm, had the usual assortment of 'good' and 'bad' bugs, etc. and never got bit by anything. We have the perimeter of the house sprayed each year, so spiders don't get inside. It works.

That's good that you do that, my brother lost part of his finger and almost his life from just reaching in and turning on the sprinklers from a brown recluse.

I agree with Georgiann. A bite from a black widow can make you very sick. It doesn't affect just the part bitten but the whole system.

As a matter of curiosity, I have a question. Would you step on a cockroach? If the roach were carrying an egg sac, would that make a difference?
:)
